I hope I am wrong but i think We missed a trick not appointing him when we had the chance. Not sure if it was Cos we didn’t want him or vica Versa but from what I can see and from what I hear from my mates who are St Mirren fans, we defo have missed a trick here. Would have got best out of Mallan too who I think as huge potential but perhaps not being given enough trust. Seems to me we are going to have to choose with the left overs.
I don't think we had the chance, he didn't want to leave St Mirren with the chance to get a promotion to the SPL on his CV. I would've been more than happy with him coming here though. I think with the new ownership and him managing the team, Sunderland will do well not to piss the league next season.
Sadly I agree. That we haven't been swiftly back in for him suggests we burnt our bridges with him with the Morais debacle... and probably with everyone else at that time. While on one hand, taking time to avoid past mistakes is a positive... though I'm not sure how long the learning needs to take in terms of Morais, the longer we take with so many teams also looking, we are quite likely to be getting someone who isn't first choice. The more we're knocked back, the less prep the new guy will have, and the longer i'd expect us to get up to speed in League 1. Time will tell
Like every appointment it’s still a risk. Massively different expectations at Sunderland compared to St Mirren etc.
If we're discussing wanting young up and coming managers, and most people are...then Ross was a great choice. He was as proven as any young manager can be. Transformed a relegation guaranteed side to avoid the drop then go up as champions the following season. You can't argue with that. He must have motivated, organised and got the best out of a set of demoralised players and turned them into winners. Doesn't matter what level you're managing at those skills should translate. I would guess when we interviewed him he knew his stock was high and was going to get a good move anyway. Our position at the time would have made him think a better offer would come along I'd imagine. I'd agree that, if he does end up at Sunderland, the media pressure will be something on a different level to St Mirren or us. We don't know if we've gone back in for him but I'm afraid it looks like possibly the right bloke, just the wrong time.
Just had a quick look at the Sunderland message board there fans seem quite indifferent about his appointment. Many look at him as a unknown etc. Same it every club no ones universally happy.
We did not miss the boat because he never climbed on board , if you think back when we were looking for Hecky"s replacement , his chairman took great delight in making it public that Jack Ross had turned us down in favour of seeing the job through where he was , therefore it wasn"t us who missed out on him , he didn"t want the job , end of
Lots of people making it sound like this guy has somehow worked miracles by getting a team (who in recent times were somewhat of a bottom half scots prem club) out of the Scottish championship which is a poor league. English League 1 is a step up from there.. St Mirren are one of those clubs who probably struggle in the scots prem but normally slightly too good for the scots champ.. So I don't think he has done owt special. Much rather have someone with a good knowledge of the English leagues and who knows how to get out of league 1 especially... Still think Clough!! Sunderland's patience won't last long if they have a bad start next season. Could be one of the first managerial casualties..
