Can I ask why Paul Hurst is wanted by more on here than Simon Grayson??? Simon Grayson is by far the more experienced ex footballer and by far more experienced AND successful than Hurst, I’m not saying he’s my No1 choice but I’ve not read one meaningful case that Paul Hurst has more to offer than Simon Grayson. What are we actually wanting from our next manager?? Someone who’s unproven who we take another punt on or someone who in 12 months time might be stood on the town hall balcony hopefully celebrating a promotion??? Be careful what you wish for..........!
It's a goof debate you have started, for sure. I am a Hurst man, because he has proved himself as a manager at every level at which he has managed and notably so, with Grimsby and Shrewsbury hardly being glamour clubs. He has got them fit, organised and into a winning mentality and he has done so at more than one club. he is also young enough to respond to the next challenge and he knows League One well. Grayson is a good choice and has a good record. If he were appointed, it would be more than a 'he'll do' appointment. If 'young and hungry' is the mantra, Hurst has just a tad more of that charisma than Grayson, but I wouldn't be disappointed with either of them ….. or Steve Agnew, or Gareth Ainsworth, or Jack Ross, or Stuart Gray. Surely it will be one of these.
Someone who doesn't help a club with a 49,000-seater stadium begin their descent into League One. Someone who doesn't take over at a team with play-off ambitions and finish mid-table. Someone whose style of football doesn't make your eyes weep actual blood.
I know what you mean but Simon Grayson was where Paul hurst is now so maybe we hoping he goes on to emulate Grayson . Grayson to me is past his sell by date and doesn’t seem to have that sparkle imo. It’s a gamble whoever we pick as even some managers with a proven record can fail at some clubs and flourish at others and vice versa . All we can do is once he’s picked is get behind them and see
Traditionally, our club has tended to appoint gaffers with little, or no, managerial experience. It seems, therefore, only logical for a lot of fans to adopt a 'go to' policy of looking at up and coming choices, rather than the availability of more experienced candidates. When discussing Simon Grayson, I believe his abilities to get clubs promoted from Division 1 is second to none. If that were the only issue to consider (and for some fans that's definitely the case), then the choice wouldn't be questioned. However, other fans look to the more agricultural style of football his sides play and have a firm dislike of it. They'll also point out his failings in the past twelve months at both Sunderland & Bradford City. Paul Hurst has learned his managerial trade at the lower levels, firstly at Boston United, then at Grimsby where he successfully got them promoted back to the Football League. He then left to take over at relegation threatened Shrewsbury, where he steered the club away from the drop zone. Then, despite having a relatively low budget to work with, he transformed the team to one that was constantly in the top three of the division all season. Even though a good number of clubs had far superior budgets to work with. He made his team extremely difficult to beat. I'm not advocating either man as our new appointment, but can definitely see positives and negatives in both the named potential candidates. I'm just glad it's not me who's making the decision.
Sunderland have been in free fall for a good few year, no manager would’ve slowed down that process. Are you also talking about the same Grayson who knows how to get teams out of league 1?
Six wins in his last 32 games. The only way he would get a team out of a division is by relegating them. He's a hoof-it merchant who loses consistently: the worst of both worlds.
Managerial record: Played 648 Won 271 Drawn 192 Lost 185 Win% 41.8 Loss% 28.5 I'm not advocating we appoint Simon Grayson, I have no idea who we should get. However, having won 4 promotions from League 1 I can see why we'd be interested and his managerial record suggests he wins a lot more consistently than he loses. Maybe his style of play is a reason not to employ him, I don't know, I don't know much about him, but his record in this division is definitely a reason to give him the job, not exclude him.
Danny Wilson's overall record is a reason to consider him for the job, not exclude him. His recent record merits nothing but exclusion, however. I'd not want Danny back, because whatever he had, he appears to have lost. Ditto with Grayson.
If you look at BFC's business model they have to go with someone like Hurst. Grayson at PNE and Leeds bought what he thought were ready made articles. The current Barnsley way is to find non league and low league players cheaply and polish them to gems. The last bit is tongue in cheek.
I agree with all you say about the two managers apart from the last little bit "i'm just glad it's not me who's making the decision" wish I was making the decision Paul Hurst every time.
"He knows how to get a team promoted from League 1." Then what? 12 month contract, then appoint a Warnock? Boring hoofball. Bradford. Sunderland. Personality of a hillbilly on largactil. It's a no from me.
We are going to struggle to get anyone with a good 'managerial' CV, unless we change our structure. I bet a few have turned us down already. The names mentioned will want total control over the playing side.
