We used to play on the rec between Bolton on Dearne and Highgate on winter nights when it was dark and we used the shadows of street light posts as the goal lines. When the ball went more that 50 yards from the road it disappeared into the gloom.....
We actually used to have access to a proper pitch, as my mates dad was groundsman / caretaker at Raley. Only problem was they had a massive german shepherd that used to stand its front paws on my shoulders & give me a hard stare, before letting me on the pitch. Scared the **** out of me that dog at the time, but it was clearly harmless.
Goalie when needed and next goal wins, usually when the kid who owned the ball had to go home for tea.
Used to play all day Saturday and Sunday and regularly played against a young Glynn Riley - although none of us could get near him!!
Life was simpler then, when you went down the shop to buy a quarter of spice before having a good kick about. Just not the same now, I feel misunderstood.
He also played in the replay when he scored and upset a certain big-nosed Liverpool central defender with a “robust” tackle......
