Please only post what’s positive about the club... Please post best moments, memories etc. Best player, best game home and away etc Best shirt we’ve had So please enjoy a happy thread...
I think all unknown quantities are positive. Something, or someone, can only become negative (in my eyes) after I've given it/them every chance and plenty of time to prove themselves. Why torture oneself by assuming that everything unknown is going to be crap?
Plymouth away about 1981. Ronnie tapping into an empty net with a big grin on his face in front of the Reds fans.
As it was the 1990s when purchased. I can still fit into my first barnsley shirt. Fabulous thing, button down collar and lightly flocked badge. Signed by Jonnie Hendrie on the back.
Liverpool away in 08 - sat in the home end and desperate to cheer. Kids in my class got it big style on the Monday Bit of handwriting on the board - ten times please and make it neat Liverpool 1 Barnsley 2 (Foster,Howard)
Far too many good times to pick them all out, apart from the obvious ones like Bradford, Man U, Liverpool, Chelsea, Huddersfield, Oxford, Millwall. There's been hundreds of others in my time. Even last season there was Sunderland, Sheff U, Brentford. The fact that we got relegated didn't stop me going ballistic during and after those games.
Someone suggested our new gaffer might have connections with Heinz & bring him in to improve our goalkeeping performance. To me, that's up there with the prospect of auto promo next season. Brilliant managerial appointment. I LOVE our club
Best moment was 4.55pm on 26th April 1997. Best player - Glavin best game home - Huddersfield 7-1. We were untouchable that night. Best game away - I'll never forget the 2-1 win at Leeds when they went up as Champions in 1990. 1500 of us, 30000 of them. Crackling atmosphere. Best shirt we’ve had - Still have a soft spot for the one from my first real season supporting the Reds in 1980/81, the one with Taits as the sponsor. Also some great memories of players who were differing in their abilities but all contributed to some great times - Futcher, Currie, Cooper (who was my hero, still never seen anyone jump like him), Taggart, Banks, Aylott, Ward, Redfearn, Hignett and so on, as well as those from more recent years. We've had some quality. The cup games v Stoke in 1989, Walsall in the play offs, beating Man Utd in the cup, Man City in the League Cup.
For me the game at Milmoor early 80’s was as good as it gets. Rotherham had gone up from third division ahead of us in second and we’re playing “We are the Champions” as they ran out. Banger scored a hat-trick and Ronnie got the last goal as we beat them 4-2. I think it was a sense of seeing Barnsley becoming something we’d never dreamed of having started watching from the late 60’s through some very ordinary times up to Alan Clark coming into the Club. Might sound daft but for me it was as least as good as promotion to the Prem.
Being able to get into ponty end for free at half time in the early 80’s as a young lad. The gate security, an old fella would let me in and tell me the score. Then I’d make my way into the stand where I’d be pushed around forward and backwards depending upon the excitement on the pitch... good times.
When Darren Moore got sent off vs Donny and we all thought we're stuffed here before romping 4 goals in the last half hour or so. 2-2 draw vs Newcastle and 2-1 win vs Boro in 09/10 season the atmosphere was something else and such battling performances. 2-0 victories vs Hull & Leicester in 12/13 season probably best I've ever seen a Barnsley side play could & should have been 5 or 6. Steele saving 2 penalties at Reading Stuffing Villa 3-1 after they nabbed two of our best players. Everything Adam Hammill. You Reds!!!
Clint Marcelle clinching promotion with the second goal against Bradford , me a grown man shedding unashamed tears of joy , pure ecstacy !
