Having watched the match live on bbc ....i then watched the highlights in itv. Mark Clattenberg was asked about the pen appeals on Kane and he pointed out that the VAR team only have 11 seconds to make a decision (with their various angles) but why? The ref made his decision in seconds for their soft one and yet 4 people in a studio couldnt see what was going in the box with Kane!! Fifa have been told to stamp this out this world cup and give marginal offsides to the attacking team...none of which happened last night. If had been neutral i would say the same...the officials from last night need re training and re developing.
If FIFA were fit for purpose they would not be happy at all with the performance of the ref last night, especially the two missed penalties. He has VAR to help out, not that anyone with eyes should need VAR for the rugby tackle on Kane in the first half. It was all the more frustrating that he managed to see the soft-arsed penalty he gave against Walker. Fortunately it didn't end up costing us but I thought the ref was pretty poor all game.
I thought that the officials had been told not to flag for what they believe are marginal offside descions, as they will be automatically reviewed in play Not for them to give them the benefit of doubt The funs going to start when this happens quite a bit and teams go on to score , and then onfield officials are informed it was offside and it is disallowed maybe up to 11 seconds later. fans celebrating in stands , fans in pubs bouncing around Unfortunately especially in pubs maybe could lead to trouble or violence Not sure what these 4 officials were looking at for Kane ones There were two people holding him pulling him back Will they be coming out afterwards and explaining why they did or did not give a certain descion , or a spokesman for them doing that, potential to get very messy. If they follow the rules outside the area to inside the penalty box , there could be a penalty nearly every time the balls in the area A lot of people are against VAR as what’s a important descion, every descion is important A throw in given wrong way , corner given wrong way Any wrong descion could lead to a goal for the opposition Players , managers, country’s will start arguing this Once it’s started it’s only a matter of time before every descion is reviewed
I thought the same and asked a Spanish mate. He has the same opinion as Tomi. Most clear penalty was given, others were less clear cut. Guess we view things differently when it's our team.
Watching in the pub Everbody thought there penalty was shady as f**k Just watched the highlights , he knew exactly what he was doing and knew exactly where there player was Deliberate elbow to the face No question Slow motion makes it look very deliberate. I believe there was worry about this before the tournament in testing that slow motion can influence officials in that it appears to make things worse. The VAR rule where they can switch the descion back to the referees if it’s classed as opinion And then the on pitch official has to go and look at a monitor of the incident and make his mind up is just pure silliness 4 video refs can’t make there mind up , so I know let the ref go to the side of pitch and have a look Maybe let a few fans take a look.
I guess the problem is it seems to be used where the on field decision is only overturned where a clear error is made. For line decisions - eg was he offside or did it cross the line or was contact inside or outside the box it should be fairly uncontraversial The problem comes with deciding if the "foul" was sufficient to overturn the on field ref. Based on last night I think had the ref not given their pen the VAR wouldnt have overturned it. The same goes for if either Kane Penalty been given it would have stood. The problem for me is that FIFA supposedly claimed that they were serious about cutting out the holding and dragging players off the ball and would use VAR to help stamp it out. They had a golden chance yesterday with the 2 rugby tackes on Kane and didnt take it. Probably because they know its a minefield as to where to draw the line. AFAIK the only penalty given on VAR evidence was the sweden one where it was a clear trip with the guy no where near the ball. Much less interpretation as to whether the contact was significant for a trip than a pull.
One difference is that the England players didn't run around going mental at the ref when Kane was pulled down like the teams did in the other VAR decisions for less blatant penalties.
Just like the reds...England are young and not cute enough to manage games like the (AHEM) more experienced players and teams do. All the successful teams do it...but it does not excuse the blatantly obvious that were missed by the officials last night....just look at where the ref was in relation to (at least) the first incident.....he had a very clear view of that....which makes me believe ...he bottled the call.
Who makes the decision out of the 4 people? Are three just operating the machine and one being another referee?
Yes, totally agree. I'm glad they didn't play the Ref. Some of the players' diving and rolling around has been embarrassing
Just checked this ref out.....he has some serious previous!! Sent wrong bloke off in confederations cup... (cameroon) and in last world cup disallowed 2 good mexico goals....just shouldnt be there. Described by many in the media as "controversial" at best. Im all for giving people chances and re training but this guy is not fit for purpose.
The VAR is already spoiling the World Cup for me. I was afraid to celebrate last night after both England's goals incase they reviewed and ruled them out, and I looked a ********* in front of the dog for celebrating!
Apparently on this refs Wikipedia it states the ref was born in Tunisia (the wife’s nephew posted a picture of it from Canada) but then Wikipedia changed it to Columbia.Did not see it myself so don’t shoot the messenger
Wikipedia entries are edited by anyone. The referee's always said he was from Columbia until 19:18 last night when somebody from Guernsey changed it to say Tunisia. Well actually until 19:17 when he changed it to TTunisia before changing it a minute later. It was changed back to Columbia 5 minutes later under wiki vandalism rules.
Well I thought theirs was a nailed on penalty because Walker swung his arm out knowing exactly where the attacker was. I also think it was a stone wall penalty on Kane. No bias, just objective opinion
