Would we be happy for our owners to pay £10 million for naming rights to the stadium? It will always be Oakwell to me but I'd be happy for the ground to be renamed for that type of investment.
All for it. Money isn't to be sniffed at and we could put it to good use. Plus we'd still call it Oakwell as fans anyway. I know plenty of Terriers who still say they play at Leeds Road instead of whatever the new ground is called at the time.
I'd be surprised if we didn't go down the route of naming the ground something tacky and ridiculous. Anything to get a few more quid to go in the pockets of over privileged players and unaccountable agents. Just another nail in the coffin of the game it used to be.
Bloody el I thought it was coral windows or summat . That tells you naming rights to stadia doesn’t always raise awareness of the brand you’re promoting . The new City capital arena ?
I'd hate Oakwell to get a commercial name. I drive past Chesterfield's ground once or twice a month and it has so much sponsorship on it that it looks like a retail park.
Makes the money though and gets them concerts like Lionel Ritchie today. More than can be said for us.
A local brewer could sponsor it...it would be like going back to the very beginning. The Acorn Stadium.
Not for me. We play at Oakwell. Once you start stripping away the identity of a football club you start killing its soul. Sure plenty more would be happy if it brought in some money, and they probably wouldn’t mind if the changed the strip to blue or called us New CityTykes Athletic. Each to their own, but when I stop identifying with the club I’ve grown up with then that’s the time I’ll probably realise it’s not just football I’ve fallen out of love with, but Barnsley FC too. I’ll remember the memories fondly though. Of a time before it was ruined by greed and supporters need for instant gratification and success at all costs. For what it’s worth I can’t see our owners doing it. I can see them slowly building up revenue streams over a number of years without impacting our identity or history, and also increasing their investment in the academy. Which I would wholeheartedly support.
Huddersfield flattened Leeds Road - their home from 1908 and built a new stadium which has had several names as far as I can remember. I know plenty of Town fans and they all feel like its their club with a very definite affinity to its fans and its town and has not lost its soul or history. I just don't get the objections, I think its all in the mind - sometimes the world changes and you have to change with it or you become irrelevant.
