Commentator on 5live said he was a liability at one point in extra time. Now, i may be biased here like, BUT my footballing definition of a liability is a player prone to mistakes. stones was pretty calm and marshalled the defence. i didnt really hear any criticisms of dire Dier or Kyle 'left flat footed there' Walker.
He had a good, solid game on the whole, but the commentator is right about that little 5 minute spell in extra time. It was like his head had gone, and he was putting pass after pass into touch or to a yellow shirt. Southgate pulled him to one side at half time(in extra time) and it seemed to sort him and he was back to his usual self after that...
Headlines in newspapers a week on Monday , Brilliant Stones gets goal that wins World Cup for England . The lad from Barnsley scores a sensational last minute header to Thwart Neymar and company.
Got a good rating in the papers mirror gave him a 7 only picked got 8 and was mom. Described stones as unflappable, although as been pointed out he did have a poor spell where his passing was all over the place but at that point the whole team couldn't string 3 passes together.
Typical of the British media. They yarp on about us being still in the dark ages but when it really comes down to it they don't trust "owt fancy". In my opinion Stones doesn't actually do what he needs to do. Currently he seems to be the pivot up near the half way line but all he does is play the ball sideways or diagonally and in front of the opposition. When we're playing a team that's sitting in and trying to make themselves difficult to break down Stones should be looking to advance further and pull one if their players out of position. As long as we've got cover behind him he should be used in a Beckenbauer type role.
That’s a **** headline. Way too long. Would never fit. Some good examples; DON’T MENTION THE VAR (Germany out) DON’T CRY 4-3 ARGENTINA NEYMAR MR NICE GUY (when the cheating swine is finally red-carded) DIER REAR (when fat Eric gets the winner off his arse)
I think Stones modified his game a little last night. As Colombia were only playing one up front he was happy to let Maguire to step up more into midfield, which is usually Stones brief. They seem tobe developing an understanding. Interesting that four of the defenders (Stones, Walker, Maguire and Rose) are from South Yorks, it must help speaking the same language.
Trippiers played here too so all singing off same song sheet when somebody sharts “What the fek tha laikin at gi it some booit “
