Didn’t you read the flyer that came through your door from David Cameron. It clearly defined what leaving the EU meant in a way that even a moron would understand.
This "deal" that they are planning makes it significantly more likely that I will be forced to leave the country of my birth to continue to work in my chosen profession. Please excuse my anger at one of the sources of this entirely self-inflicted problem.
Please don't think I'm picking an argument, it's a genuine question and without wanting to pry too much...why should this be the case for you?
Sorry. Either I’ve missed the point or you have. If you think that a referendum is a sensible democratic tool in our system then ok. I did think one of the main planks of leaving was to somehow reinforce the sovereignty of our parliament. Even you have to see the irony in that. I haven’t mentioned Corbyn or even a desire to stay in the EU. We are leaving next March whatever happens. Anyone who thinks we don’t need to have a plan for what happens has “got to be some kind of idiot” (sic). My point is that Cameron triggered a referendum to bolster his own position and in no way could you expect people who voted for either side to understand the ramifications of the outcome. Everyone has lives to lead, they aren’t idiots.
I agree with your summary DR, it's been coming for over 35 years. My worry is a equally divided Labour Party led by a man who does not inspire the confidence of the country. It's a shambles and no one will take responsibility. Whichever we voted in the Referendum we all deserve to live in a country that works for us all. People put their trust in the politicians and they have let them down. Based on history that is dangerous.
Look at the broader picture - The right wing Afd Party is on the rise in Germany - Austria going/gone?? the same way. PM Orban of Hungary and the leaders of the Balkan countries in the EU have their own right wing Nationalist agenda. Conte, Italian PM wants out of the Euro. Greece is knacked. The Baltic states are keeping their heads down because they need European support incase of potential 'problems' from Russia. What was never really discussed at the time of the referendum and what is not being acknowledged now is that the EU as an organisation is failing. And what ever plan May (or her successor !!) comes up with it will be rejected because the EU leaders know that once the UK is out the Union is finished.
I work in IT, which is a service industry. Without alignment on services it makes it significantly harder to sell into the EU and currently around 15-25% of my colleagues are working for projects in EU countries. This wont continue putting those people under threat (the position of my EU-born but UK-resident colleagues is uncertain but they could potentially be more employable than UK born colleagues). Spread this over all the major competitors and combine it with the current slowdown in the UK market (a relatively high number are on the bench at the moment) and there will be a shrinkage in the market, leading to redundancies and a lack of demand. Add in the pressures from Indian competitors and it leaves a bleak medium term outlook for employees within the sector - especially at the higher paid end. I expect a short-term uptick as companies need help to divest their business but long term I see a relative lack of opportunity within the UK.
Aye failing to such an extent they are all totally behind the EU position on rejecting any deal with the UK that doesn't guarantees the 4 Freedoms.
Out of interest. I understand the democracy bit but in your opinion is this divorce going well for you? What do you want to happen now we are in this current situation? If we continue to mess it up (which in my opinion is happening but thats irrelevant) then are you happy for us to carry on anyway?
Couldn’t agree more but I’m glad we had a vote if only for the sake of clarity . Some folk are making it a right versus left issue now when obviously it’s s cross party issue . And most of the labour heartlands voted out don’t forget . I live in Doncaster and it was something like 70% out and similar in Barnsley too .
Can you point to the place on the ballot paper where that was an option? Thanks in advance. Cameron had zero authority to say anything. The question was a binary one everything else is interpretation.
I think the last thing we have is clarity. If you set out at the start to create a mechanism to make a bigger mess of this country, and leave as many people disillusioned with the outcome (both leave and remain) you would have struggled.
The new Brexit Secretary is Dominic Raab. Never heard of him personally. Good luck to the lad anyway, he'll need it.
We had Remain telling people that it meant having to leave the SM and CU, and Leave saying we didn't and it was project fear. The referendum should have been a choice between set and achievable positions (remain, leave everything and possibly somewhere in the middle).
Egotistical right wing lawyer who speaks in soundbites. A bit of a chequered history with female colleagues.... allegedly.
