To say that ex-miners don't hold right wing views is a bit daft, I know plenty and more than a few are straight up racist and sexist. They might be left wing when it comes to economics and social mobility but when it comes to women and "folk from not round these parts" it can be a different story.
I know loads too. And they aren't racist or whatever.. I've Not met one ex yorksminer yet who is a Tory either...
The reason people vote Labour is because it is the party closer to their interests than the Tories. Why would any working class people vote for Tory austerity? The Workwering Class pick up the bill for every Capitalist balls up like we did in 2008.
I've met plenty of miners or ex miners and I've met plenty that are racist as well as plenty that aren't. Don't you know of any racist miners? No ex miners who think immigrants are steal their jobs? That want them out of the country? None that are homophobic and against gay marriage?
Here's a circle you can't square. What's the average labour percentage of the vote in any general election in Barnsley? About 60%? What was the percentage for brexit in the referendum? Over 60? Seems like there's a minimum 20% Labour voters who opted for brexit. As has been correctly pointed out a significant number of Barnsley folk vote Labour not because they're socialist but because it's in their economic interest to do so.
If anyone wants to pm me for names of ex miners who regularly post offensive, racist and generally right wing material then feel free. Then you can take a look and see that there are indeed many people who would have been die hard socialists back then who most definitely are not today. This is nothing to do with opinion but is evidence based on primary sources.
I don't think they have voted tory; i'd suggest they voted ukip over the last few years. The problem is who will they vote for now that ukip is pretty much defunct?
The ex Miners and their communities are no different to any other people and communities in that there are a plethora of different opinions and attitudes about a plethora of topics/ issues. I would add though that ( most) )and their communities have the experience of being treated by its own Govt as something they’ve trod in, so why some of them take on board this rhetoric and hatred of others from the right- wing and lies from the Tories often baffles me.
But many now evidently do. If anyone would have suggested this 30 odd years ago they'd have been laughed out of the park. How can we change things back around? Got to be a generational thing. Things will be so much different in 30 odd years time: i think the next generation will be much more tolerent but tough times ahead.
Similarly with me, as each government limps from crisis to crisis making the country worse as they go, I try to take each situation on it’s merits. The tories are way too aggressive and hard with the man in the street at my economic and social level whereas labour are a limp wristed weak joke. Neither really speak for me consistently and there is no other realistic alternative to vote for. In a nutshell, I’m struggling to have a smidgeon of faith in any of these out of touch, self serving turd biscuits.
That's fair enough, as I say I was liking his opinion on neither being left or right because I feel the same. I do get accused of being right wing on some subjects and I can't deny that I do lean to the centre right on some issues but I also lean to the left on some issues too. I don't think there is anything wrong with the left or the right, it is the extremes that I have issues with. I have no time whatsoever for far right views and I will, and have, shot down views that come from this part of the political spectrum. I only have one poster on ignore and that is simply because I find their views too extreme and while I am happy to debate them I don't think this particular posted contributes to debates very well. Having said that if I bumped into them in a pub I would happily sit and have a pint and a chat with them. I often find that the best debates are face to face. I am exactly the same in real life as I am on here. I have a rule that I would never say anything online that I would not say to somebody face to face. You noticed my location? It is a bit of a double bluff really. It does relate to the position I played when I played football but because I get called a right winger on here I thought it would be a bit of a joke if I used it as my location. PS. I don't fall out with people, I have no reason to fall out with you. I might post some quite robust views at times but I never mean it to be taken in a way that insults. I like reading the views of everyone and I respect the opinion (within reason) of everyone who posts on here.
