No ! But as an aside we all know the greats of newsreading Trevor McDonald , Moira Stewart etc gender shouldn’t come into it and that’s my point . I just hate it when it’s based purely on gender or race or whatever . Every Job ideally would go to the best candidate full stop . I’m not sure if I was on a shortlist and it was just for bald middle aged men how I’d feel about that tbh discrimination wether negative or positive is never the answer . UTR

But herein lies the nub. Is Huw Edwards, so much better at doing News at Ten than Mishal Husain, or Kate Silverton or Jane Hill?

I agree things should be based on ability. But I see no considerable variance in ability. Andrew Marr a great example. Always enjoyed the Sunday Morning slot he does. A few weeks ago, Emma Barnett filled in. She was incredible. Thoroughly impressive and far better than marr has been for a good while. If they did the same hours and shared that job... how much more would Marr get compared to Emma Barnett?

And therein lies the problem, not just at the BBC, but many places.

Sadly, the gender gap formulas are dreadful and don't assist in bridging a gap, also the formulas for comparing like for like jobs are terrible too. It will be a wonderful day when we finally see parity for people on ability and not who they are. I doubt we'll see it in my lifetime and hopefully i've a fair way to go yet.

It’s entertainment at the end of the day, they shouldn’t be compared to average salaries, it’s a job I’d imagine virtually everyone on here couldn’t do, your average person gets nervous & on edge hearing their own voice back on a video or recording never mind talking on live TV or radio.

Lineker’s worth every penny for me. He’s the best there is in terms of sports presenting. He’s a class act.

A hell of a lot of middle aged & older folk love Steve Wright & Jeremy Vine. The shows they have get huge ratings 5 days a week. Chris Evans & Nick Grimshaw also get big audiences.

When you consider the preparation involved they probably don’t do that many hours less than your average 9-5 worker. The shows are 3 hours long but they’ll be loads of other work. As part of the job you have to be knowledgeable on current affairs, sports, music, politics, even all the stuff you don’t like.

Every time there’s a guest on you’ll need to have read his book if he’s an author / have an autobiography out, watch his / her film if they’re an actor, watch their game if they’re a sportsman etc so you don’t sound like an idiot.

Tough job, especially in this age where everything you do is scrutinised & any mistakes are ridiculed on Twitter.

Are there any women at the BBC doing good jobs who should be on there? I genuinely don’t know, I know Jo Whiley’s on radio 2 but I don’t think she has anywhere near the fan base of Evans, Wright, Vine etc so it’s understandable she gets less. I think Kelly Cates is brilliant as a 5 live presenter but so is Mark Chapman & he’s not on either so wouldn’t say she’s been hard done to.

I’d also say £150 a year is a snip. I watch plenty of BBC drama’s, as well as match of the day & also listen to 5 live & the podcasts they make.

The one I’m struggling to fathom is Alan Shearer. Presenting takes some talent, but he’s just a pundit on a once-a-week (seasonal) late-night football highlights show! There must be dozens of ex pros that would be equally adept, if not better. He is being paid more than some BBC staff that are doing daily presenting jobs with much higher audience figures. Not sure why ex footballers still get footballer wages.

They probably want to keep him away from Sky / BT as he’s a very popular former England captain. No disrespect to Phil Neville, Jermaine Jenas, Danny Murphy etc but they just aren’t the same caliber

I think three quid a week is a bargain for what BBC offer. If they went to adverts they would lose what makes them unique. It wouldn't matter to me because I never watch adverts anyway. If I am watching live sport I will change the channel for 3-4 minutes. Otherwise just record it all to Sky Plus and whiz through adverts.

I agree with much of what you say in this and completely agree that they do far more work than what is seen on tv/heard on radio, however im fairly certain they don't read every guests' books and go into that kind of detail... that's the researcher's job as far as im aware. They'll just be given snippets to use for asking questions.

Lauren Laverne is top paid DJ on 6 Music. Last year she was on around £350k.

It isn't gender though is it. Its experience and existing status that is why some people get paid more than others.

Emma Barnet has done relatively small roles in the past, Andrew Marr has presented a flagship programme for over ten years, a role he earned by getting big political scoops and proving his ability. He rightly gets paid more as a more experienced and valuable presenter

Two things you should never question a man about: how much he earns and his choice of woman.

And it comes down to opportunity. Hopefully, as times change and opportunity is extended to all genders and people from all diversities, a woman will have the same ability as a male to host a flagship programme for 10 years or more to be able to have the chance to earn what a male has or more.

Hopefully they'll scrap the licence fee in the next decade. If people want to support the BBC they can go to a subscription model.

I agree with this. You want it, you pay for it.

I don't pay Tesco as well as ASDA when I only want to shop at ASDA.

Let the BBC sink or swim based on whether people want to watch their output.
