My old band recorded at the studio in Chorlton in early 90's, that the single version of this track was recorded at (it was re-recorded for the LP, the Queen is Dead). Studio engineer was called Paul Roberts (Drone Studios). He was a lovely bloke, but an alcoholic & passed away many years ago now. He worked with the Buzzcocks, Black Grape & all sorts of people.
My band used the same rehearsal space as the Weddoes for many years. Place in Osset, called Riverside.
The Fall are worthy of another thread. This is deliberately limited to Smiths / Weddoes. Once again all points people make are interesting & valid. Weddoes never had a Johnny Marr. Smiths worked with Steven Street. Weddoes worked with Steve Albini. Both are inspirational bands from the era when indie music was truly indie music.
If you want something a little less frantic try Cinerama - the band that Gedge put together after the Weddoes - more relaxed vibe, lyrically interesting. Well worth a listen.
Crawl - The wedding Present. Dint really get into The Smiths until way after they'd gone their separate ways, so no real favourites.
Yeah, liked them too. Did one about shagging the au pair (sorry, can’t remember name) and Crusoe which featured the tune from the old black and white Saturday morning Robinson Crusoe shorts. Of the later Wedding Present albums Take Fountain is magnificent - every tune a winner if you’re in a certain kind of mood. Saw them half a dozen times. Wall of noise, great mosh, but I remember then being a bit tight on encores. Also bought and love the Ukrainian folk music album.
No encores at Wedding Present gigs. Well, just one at The Collusseum Leeds 89ish, when they were filming it for their *PUNK film recording.
Love em both but Smiths clinch it for sheer consistency. Having said that Perfect Blue by the Weddoes is one of my favourite songs ever.
The Wedding Present by a country mile for me. I rate The Smiths highly but my love for all things Gedge has spanned 30 years and shows no sign of letting up. Off to see em in Scunthorpe next month. Can’t name a favourite track, too many to chose from.
I persuaded the Mrs to have "Love" by Cinerama as our first dance song at our wedding in 2006. She had already vetoed "Take Me I'm Yours" amongst several indie suggestions.
