When I was a kid bakers in Bolton on Dearne square were the best for miles.

I used to love sharpes fish cakes from goldthorpe

Unless you live on Thornely Avenue and have to risk your life trying to get out onto a 40mph road with your vision in both directions blocked by muppets parking on the junction. Tried several times to get the council interested but no response. Presumably they will take full responsibility when the inevitable tragedy occurs. Not.

Last f&c's I had in Barnsley were Woodys. Fish was decent, but the chips were crap. Down the years, fish and chips in the north don't seem as good as I remember as a kid. Tried the one that used to be on Park Road, at top of Warren Quarry Lane, Darns, that one off Townend Roundabout. Probably one or two others. Maybe its the more modern packaging instead of newspaper?

Best ones I've had the last few years were VC Jones in Whitstable, proper old school cooking oils, and a few weeks ago, Mary Janes in Cromer were really good.

It was more that most seem to only open on random days than the actual short hours each day. If their opening times were like 4pm to 7pm every day then I'd understand it but when it seems to be Mondays, Thursday and Friday or something I just don't get it

Ive noticed though that the best tasting ones tend to be open much more hours, I don't know if the two things are linked

Tunstall Cross is good on a Friday afternoon when the owner is doing the frying, other times it can be a bit greasy though.

Keelings are decent but not your usual fish and chips as they use gluten-free batter.

Shame there are no fish and chip restaurants in Barnsley as they usually do the best takeaways as well.

One on top of Carlton Hill was great years ago- we affectionately called the owners Scabby Don and Greasy Gladys- kids were cruel back then :)

When I was a kid, about 8 or 9 I guess, the chippy opposite our house, what is now called Y-PAS but wasn't back then, experimented with opening on a Tuesday tea time. It was an exciting time, we could get fish and chips for tea! Prior to that it just opened from 8pm to 11:30pm, plus Friday and Saturday lunch and maybe another lunch in midweek. Pretty much the same as all other local fish and chip shops. If you wanted fish and chips for tea back then, you were knackered. They primarily catered for people coming out of the pub, like pizza/kebab/burger places do now, and Saturday lunch, or dinner time as we always called it.

Fish and Chips have become a tea time thing, but they never used to be.

On the strength of your post, me and my kids got our tea from there yesterday. I assumed it had closed. Not been for 20+ years, and it's not exactly in a location where you happen to drive past it.
Proper chippy, cooked and served by English people. Not just as good as I remember, but better.

I agree, which is why a lot of fish and chip places now sell pizza, kebabs, etc. Thus enabling there window of trade to be larger and their takings to be increased. Not always a good thing for the quality of the fish and chips though....

Barely anywhere fries in dripping anymore, it used to be more or less the norm.

Find somewhere frying in dripping and you’ll get the chips of your youth I’d wager.

Whitby’s in donny (there’s one in Rotherham too) I find very nice for this reason.

Yeah they are OK but nothing special. Tend to get a fish that could be bigger for the price and far too many overcooked brown chips, instead of them being more golden.
