ought to be given a midfield role for me .
Causes havoc when he ventures into opposition 18 yard box .

Talking to some Leeds fans the other day.

They say Stones is a liability and Maguire is England's best defender

Stones will always be regarded as a liabilty in England because hes not a Row Z defender. If he was Brazilian or Spanish he'd be regarded as the worlds greatest defender

They just don't appreciate a ball playing centre half. Maybe they'd prefer a clogger in the side who just boots it up field or out of play.

They’re listening to the panelist’s and commentators too much. The number of times Stones has played an incisive pass or a defensive block that doesn’t get mentioned, yet every time Maguire as much as looks forward they shower him with magnitudes. I have nothing against Maguire but the mistakes he has made ( and he has made them) don’t seem to be dwelled upon as much as Stones mistakes have. These 2 look like being England’s centre back pairing now for a perhaps a few years. Hope they are treated equally.

The only thing I think you could criticise Stones for at the World Cup is where on the pitch he has tried to play from. For me, when in possession he should be in the Pirlo, deep lying playmaker role. That way the two other centre halves can tuck in behind him to cover for any mistakes(Walker with his pace would be invaluable). Obviously, when defending he can slot back in to ensure we have the numbers in defence...

I just can't get my head around fans and pundits like slagging him off for trying to bring a bit of flair and finesse to the team. We should be celebrating it, not vilifying it.

Once again the panel make sure Stone’s is at the centre of all things negative.

As Lothar Matthaus said last week,"John Stones is the best centre half in the world".

    Idiots!!
    Let's play 3 phil Jones types...how wonderful!
Thankfully Southgate made special mention of him today....amd i know he appreciates Stones big time.
Fantastic tournament for stones and will only add to his experience and overall ability.
Top top player...who does make the odd mistake but more than over compensates by his total game play.

To be fair the main criticism from the panel was for Jones and Rose. Even Keane acknowledged that Stones will improve but was quite scathing about the other two. I think most people can see just how good Stones is.

I'm not a fan of Dier but I thought he played well today. Every time Stones pushed forward he dropped into the CB position. Stones looks immense pushing forward. How about this, when England are under pressure, John pushes into midfield and the full backs drop. The formation becomes a 4-2-3-1 or even 4-4-2 which on Wednesday would have denied Croatia the space down the flanks and today would not have left a spare Belgium player on the overlap. Just my thought as an accountant who's never managed a tiddly winks game :p:)

Don’t know what people see in rose. Imagine being made to look a worse wing back by Ashley Young who’s just been thrown into that position in the past year. Rose consistently rubbish for England ala Raheem Sterling.
