It was called a huge success, a fantastic cup run etc.

When England get to the semis of the world cup its a failure.

Only people who want to be critical for the sake of it, will say this. England have not been a failure, not enough yes.

Genuinely not heard anyone calling it a failure.

Maybe there's some people on here saying so, but not heard that from any of the media I've read/heard or anyone I've spoken to.

I agree with Jay. Not heard anyone call it a failure. It's a huge success in my eyes given virtually no-one thought we'd get to the semi finals. Yes the last two games have been a bit underwhelming but both times we were just playing better, more experienced sides who are both at the peak of their "golden generation".

Majority of people think we've done really well to make semis.

When Barnsley lost the semi final of the FA Cup to a team they could have beaten after getting further than people imagined supporters were happy with the run but disappointed with the result of the last match. Like many others, I was at the Semi against Cardiff. As I've said times many before, if that gilt edged chance had
fallen to Nards and not Kayode, we would have drawn level and I remain convinced, could
have gone on and won the game and possibly the Cup, because from what I saw, Pompey
didn't have any stand out players and could have been beaten in the final.!

Its been a success but the problem with us English is that now we will expect again at the next tournament and its back to the days of the "Golden Generation". That's when it all goes tits up, especially when the back page of The Sun starts on the bandwagon.

The vast majority feel that way but I was referring to the few idiots (on here) who couldn't wait to slag the England team off for finishing fourth. People like nudger

For me its because we defeated teams we had no buisness beating whereas England beat teams they should be beating ideally, we came short at hard working Croatia although it was close imo but the Belgians hardly broke sweat in 3rd playoff .
Can’t compare both runs really both different imo I’d say Tunisia getting through the group stages and into quarter finals would have been more comparable.

I think the level to which expectations have dropped at international levels means that beating teams below is in the world rankings is seen as something to get excited about. I think we played 2 good sides and got beat 3 times, tells you we have a long way to go. A “well done” England suffices, any hero’s welcome when they arrive is just not justified imho.

There is a similarity, in that in both cases there is unlikely to be a better chance in future for either club to make the final.

Also, in both cases there were chances there to be taken that could have made it a reality.

I can't see Barnsley getting to an FA Cup semi final again in my lifetime. I also think it's unlikely England will win the World Cup.
The big nations will come back strongly. We are not one of the big nations in world football. We have restored some pride & dignity & hopefully if England can find a bit more quality & consistency we may continue at least to compete.
