We pressed well in the first half. Thiam was putting himself about. We looked knackered half and hour in though. Hedges was very bright and scored a fantastic goal.

Salford came into it much more in the second half after we made wholesale changes. We didn’t have much going forwards although Moncur hit the post after good work by Adeboyejo. Salford will feel unlucky not to have got a draw from the game.

Neither Fryers or Pinnilos looked great in the middle. We could go with a mobile defensive midfielder. Someone in the ilk of Kante.

Pinnock MOTM for me. Solid defensively, played some fantastic cross field passes and was dangerous at set pieces.

So fryers and pinillos were playing in central midfield?? Did we create alot of chances but fail to score or was creativity a problem?

So we sell Mallan, Knasmullner and Pearson, and then resort to playing our dodgy left-backs in midfield to make up the short fall...

Welcome to L1 .. More than any other season, with the transfer window closing so early... our league position next season will depend on how many injuries we have and to whom. Make do may become the norm.

Alternatively we could be working hard behind the scenes to bring players in to replace those you’ve mentioned.

Sounds like a throw back to when Robbie Williams did.

It actually makes it harder with billionaire owners.. everyone knows, so want top dollar and more, for maybe players. Selling club, player and agent. Will not be easy to bring players here, at a fair price..

Fryers first half alongside Mowatt until he got injured and then Pinillos second half alongside Potts and Moncur.

We created enough chances first half with Thiam and Moore up front, Hedges on the left and Adeboyejo on the right but second half we lacked creativity. Moore, Thiam and Hedges all went off and Adeboyejo moved centrally with Isgrove on the right, Mottley-Henry on the left and Moncur in the hole. Aside from Moncur hitting the post we did create much as it just wasn’t sticking up top. Salford put us under a lot of pressure and looked a decent side. Pinnock dealt with everything though and helped Smith through the game.

Playing either Mallan or Knasmullner as a more defensive central midfielder would result in the opposition walking through our midfield, regardless of their level. And Pearson, as solid as he was defensively, doesn’t have enough quality on the ball to play centre mid.

Getting a solid holding midfielder should be priority these next couple of weeks I think.

I'll bet you as much as you like that neither will start in midfield against Oxford.

It's a friendly. Fitness and trying things are more important than anything else.

It’s pre-season, the purpose of these friendlies is to build up fitness levels and try out different things.

Exactly right. It's quite amusing that some folk complain that we didn't score enough against Gainsborough or Salford, yet keep shtum when we hit seven against York.:D
For me, the results of preseason friendlies matter not one jot. I'd have the same attitude if I were a Sunderland fan (1-0 defeat at Darlington & 1-1 draw at Hartlepool thanks to a them getting a late equaliser), or a Bradford City supporter ( 2-1 defeat at Guiseley & 1-0 defeat at York).

See, we’re better than Sunderland and Bradford already. What is there to worry about?:)

I agree with that and it wouldn’t surprise if we went to the German leagues for such a player it seems to be a popular country for bossy midfielders imo

Fair enough id imagine there will be some sunderland and bradford fans that think the same...... Pre season results obviously mean nothing but if your getting beat by non-league teams its not exactly breeding confidence is it so if i was those fans i dont think id be too happy

Yeah I definitely think we’ll be looking at players outside the UK. Can’t wait for people on here spelling the likes of ‘Schweinsteiger’ when some can’t get Stendel right

Completely agree with the above. Pinnock was superb and Hedges excellent too in the half that he played. Victor showed flashes of being a competent member of the first team set up.

However, I did think some of the passing was sloppy and I didn't see too much evidence of the counter press. Playing Fryers or Pinillos in a central holding midfield role is not an option on yesterday's showing. Neither are comfortable using their right foot and are closed down far too easily when trying to get the ball on to their left side.
