More needs to be done to stop Premier league clubs from hoarding players and a key way to do that is to make loaning out players even harder and also to reverse the crazy academy rules.

Even Southgate has said that a key reason for the young players having the right attitude, desire and toughness is that they come through the ranks at unfashionable lower league clubs. They've also all said that in order to develop players need to be playing.

I think this world Cup has shown that it doesn't really matter if you're coached on the pitch overlooking monk bretton as a 14 year old or on a pitch in a £200m academy. How many of our world cup squad came from the man City academy as opposed to ours or Sheffield Uniteds?

Scrap loans and make young players realise at an early age that they have a choice to make. Play for a lower league club, become an accomplished player and get noticed as a MAN or up and leave for a big fancy named academy as a CHILD where you will sit on your arse with a stifled career till you're in your mid twenties. At present it's far too easy for players to run off to big academies where they know they get the big bucks and when it all goes pear shaped they have a safety net of being loaned out to a smaller club. All well and good but being loaned out for a few months and playing is no substitute for being a first team player regularly.

Scrap the academy poaching rules that the fa have brought in for exactly the same reason. Forcing clubs to lose their assets at a young age to big named clubs does NOT help the England team one bit, all it does is harms it.

Good post that. That is a big problem that the FA could solve easily. Hard to limit the number of development players they take on, but say a player has been though the youth levels & not had 3 first team matches for their parent club by the age of 20, then there should be some sort of release clause, that if a club offered (say £500,000), the player would be free to talk to the offeror. Simple rule. Would mean clubs would be more inclined to play young promising players. Would see some players going to championship, or lower premier league teams. Would benefit the England team & make the league more competitive.

Don't scrap loans as they give the players a chance to break out from u23s football and get a taste in league football early in their careers and it's worked really well for some of main England side like Trippier Kane and pickford.

We need to implement something that states sides must play so many from the academy each week and make a wage cap for youngsters to stop big sides giving them big wages to out bid smaller sides

I don’t think making it more difficult to loan players out would help, it would have an adverse impact. Loftus-Cheek wouldn’t have had any game time at all. And us loaning Tripper and Butland really helped their development.

There needs to be some disincentive to take on foreign players in academies. A quota of English players in first team squads is sadly unlikely to happen, but perhaps there could be an 90% quota at academy level.

We also need to improve facilities at grass roots level. Playing on muddy full sized pitches is never going to produce a Modric type player. We need kids to be playing on 4G pitches during winter.
