Ibis arm wasn’t up and the French player moved at the last second leaving him no chance to react anyway, crap decision, or should that be crepe?
Every one of the pundits on both channels have suggested it was definitely not. Out of a general poll of 100 people, maybe 2 would say pen. You're one of them
So, for the 23,000th time...…….. Some calls on VAR will be relatively factual, i.e. was the ball over the goal line, was the player offside (behind the last defender, etc). Some calls will be subjective, i.e. foul play for a penalty, handball in the area - deliberate or otherwise. The latter will still be the province of the referee - just with better evidence. It doesn't matter whether you think he is right or wrong - it is his call to make. For what it's worth, that was as blatant a handball as you could wish to see. But that opinion doesn't matter either. IT'S THE REFEREE'S CALL, FFS!
Just watched the highlights can't see anything wrong with any of the French goals. It was definitely a pen and which other one was controversial?
So every pundit thought it wasn't a penalty. Every one of them. Comments ranging from "totally outrageous" to "that penalty decision disgusts me". The referee himself missed it first time and then had to view it for 3 minutes, and then went back to have another look. And you think it was as blatent as you could wish to see? Hmm, OK. Pfft.
I'm not being funny because it's all about opinions but did you hear Gary Crisps reading out the handball law and explaining it earlier?
I've watched it about 30 times and have gone from thinking it was an obvious penalty to an almost certain penalty. Watch it again and look at both of the defender's arms. As the ball's coming in his left arm is higher than his right, pointing up. He lowers both arms simultaneously but as the ball comes to him his left arm suddenly moves quicker, slaps the ball and ends up right across his stomach. His right arm on the other hand moves at the same speed and stops by his side and then goes up again. Its that quickening of the speed of his left arm on to the ball and then across his stomach on the follow through as though he's trying to hide it after the contact with the ball which persuades me it was the right decision. It was obviously a split-second panic decision if it was deliberate. Only the defender knows whether it was deliberate or not though but it looked like it was. The clearest view is after 1.11;
But that means it wasn't a CLEAR and OBVIOUS error by the referee (not to give it) so he shouldn't have changed his mind.
I think so. But my point is that it doesn't matter what you, I or Donald Trump thinks, it's still a subjective call. And the referee now has the same evidence as the rest of us. The VAR doesn't make a subjective decision an objective one (unlike 'line' calls).
I think the problem is with the people watching in the box telling the ref he needs to look at it they put doubt into his mind. So he goes into it thinking he had made a mistake. I would get rid of the people watching and just give each team some challenges to use.
Penalty every time for me, looks like he moved his arm to stop the ball. VAR worked perfectly as far as I'm concerned.
