The law states 11pm unless it is unreasonable. Reasons for this can include young children and the source of the noise being outside.
I wouldn't be particularly happy but I'd also understand there's not much I can do. I'd feel completely different if they had had the common courtesy of warning me though. In fact my neighbours can be quite noisy at times and they must know that they can be heard but simply don't care. It doesn't really bother me in terms of the noise as I can block it out in my head but the fact they don't care annoys me. Compare that with when they went away and left their 20ish year old son alone. He came round and said he would be having a party that weekend and that I was welcome to attend or if I chose not to I could go round and ask him to turn it down at any time I wanted. No worries I said and let a couple of his mates park on my drive. Its the courtesy that makes a difference
Yes, I'm similar to you in this respect. I do think I'm overly sensitive to causing disturbance and annoyance to other people, so find it very annoying when people just do what they want and to hell with anyone else. I'm happy to be called 'miserable' in that case.

I feel guilty having a shower late at night in case they can hear it through the wall and when I go upstairs and I know they're home I walk quietly in case they hear loud footsteps Then I wake up at 7am to him hammering again. I have no idea what he does in that living room but I can only assume the entire place is made of wood
I'm always considering if neighbours can hear noises through the wall. I barely watch TV anyway as you know but if I do I have it on quietly and I stopped inviting friends over years ago as they have REALLY loud voices and I found myself cringing all the time and wanting to tell them to shh, which wouldn't make me the best hostess. My house is too small for socialising anyway so we just go to their places and they can annoy their own neighbours as much as they want.
I know what you mean I have had similar thoughts with my current neighbour. Doesn't actually bother me but I'd say nearly every 2 days I get 15 mins of drilling. Multiply that by 6 years and I'm wondering if the wall will just give in one day.
That's what I wonder. The noise doesn't bother me but I do find myself thinking what can he possibly be doing? I see him take the drill and hammer into the house but no materials at all ever and yet I would say its at least 3 days a week for around an hour for a few years now
Exactly the same if anyone comes round here so I do the same, I go to their houses where its their problem

Our neighbours through the summer months are always having gatherings bit of snap some music loads of laughter and we love it they wrap it up about tenish and no problem

Sorry I don't think it came across correctly. I wasn't suggesting you haven't tried. The assumption I made was that you have probably already tried and it's done nothing. And the horrible attitude part was again me meaning your inconsiderate neighbours not you. Looking back at it I can see how my wording is unclear.
If only we could arrange for all us noise worriers to live on the same street and the noisy bunch altogether too. Maybe one day you will ask him and it will all make perfect sense
It's awful and can have a real negative impact on quality of life. I know when I've looked into it in the past it's hard to get anything done. When I used the large speaker approach to basically escalate things I was renting so knew I could move without too much trouble. Now I own my home and have two kids I don't think I would take such drastic action.
