PRESS | Alex Mowatt Interviews Following this afternoon's 1-0 victory over Salford City, Reds midfield man Alex Mowatt gave his reaction to the team's third win in succession so far this pre-season. Continue reading on the official site...
If Stendel can unlock the player that broke through at Leeds then I think Mowatt could be the stand out player this year. If he fires, and Moncur plays like he did at Colchester, then we have quite a formidable L1 midfield. With Izzy and Hedges out wide and hopefully 1 or 2 additions.
All ifs occook, there should not be ifs these player are above division 1 standard and I would expect them to boss most teams in this league.
I hope he proves me wrong, but I've seen too many promising players slide down the leagues (a la Lumsden). I'm not sure if it's confidence, other issues like depression or just not working hard enough. Moncur, I expect to be moved on, or to have a great season & win a contract elsewhere. He has the ability, but his fitness last season was a joke. He couldn't play more than 45 minutes.
Agree wholeheartedly JP. Reading the Chronicle on Friday, it's something he's acknowledged. He's picked up on the criticism he's recieved in the press and on social media and has vowed to up his fitness and stamina levels and is ready to add " steel" to his all round game. I hope he can,as he could be a very important player for us in the coming season.
I think he said the same when he came back from his loan when he wouldn't fight for a place after about 3 games. And last season his only goal from a fair few appearances was on the final day when we were 4-0 down. He's got ability, but he's not applied it very well with us. He didn't do very well out on loan either. Nor did Mowatt. Nor did McGeehan. He should tear League 1 up. But whether he can be bothered is another thing. And of course, he's out of contract next year so if he does, there is a strong likelihood he'll be walking on a free.
I think both Moncur and Mowatt need to pull up some trees this season or they'll be dropping down the leagues. McGeehan could have been cut some slack last yeardue to his horrendous injury before we bought him but I fully expect him, of the three, to be the standout performer this coming season.
I think its all about good man management. You dont need all this modern sports science and stuff in League 1. Just ask Andy Ritchie
