Football is so desperately broken. £15m for a kid who's scored around 1 in 4 for a mid table championship side. He'll get huge wages, linger in the reserves, and in 4 years expect a huge signing on fee and wages even higher most likely, or before... or he may play a few games in cup comps and treble his fee to go to Birmingham et al. Such a pity we pay so over the odds so soon for players who then never progress much further.
Ollie Watkins , 11 goals in all competitions last season , not too different from Tom Bradshaw , we are receiving offers allegedly in the region of £850 k for Tom , whilst Brentford await bids of around £15 million for Watkins , is there such a vast difference between the players ?
Nobody because we could never have afforded him when he joined Brentford last summer. He had an OK season for his first ever at championship level, but his stats are no better than Bradshaw so not sure why someone would want to pay the sums mentioned for him.
Understand that , but we have not kicked a ball this season so clubs wanting to buy either player can only go what they have seen so far & both players played in the Championship last season & previous to the Championship one player played in division one the other in division two . In the Championship & all competitions last season , Bradshaw edged it but whilst I am not saying that potentially Watkins maybe the better prospect but is there realistically over a £14 million difference between the values ?
If you google him , he is described as a forward who plays for Brentford . I have always been impressed with the lad although he did not exactly rip up the Championship but if the one thing that Brentford do, is to drive a hard bargain & fair play to them , rest assured , they will get top dollar for the lad
Potential and ability. If you had seen both players play regularly the difference would be obvious. Bradshaw is a good L1 striker Watkins can make a good Premiership one.
Contract, age, current destination.... and the clubs looking around. I'm sure if Bradshaw was rated higher, Crystal Palacerather than Millwall would be knocking on our door
Jesus this is why football's ****** 15million for potential I can remember when 15million got you Alan shearer. Btw I like watkins I said we should of tried to sign him last season before Brentford did but he is never worth that.
Thought the same. Think he played a few games up top but mainly played on the left behind the striker. Not sure why he's being compared to Bradshaw.
It was me who was making a comparison , not on ability or potential as I think Watkins has the edge in those departments , the comparison was regarding that they both had near identical goal returns in the Championship yet the valuations being banded about are saying that these players are valued at £14 million apart , which I think is amazing & says everything about the madness of todays market , Watkins no doubt has a bright future but no way did he stand out or rip up the championship.
Agree the market is ridiculous. But as you and others have stated, Watkins costs more because he's younger, better and is not in the last year of his contract. And his goal return shouldn't be compared because he didnt really play as a striker.
I know this much, he aint £14 million better than your average championship player , then he is worth what someone will pay . The crux of the matter to me is , that it is a way over the top & we should dig our heels in & only sell our players at market value just the same as Brentford do
