Need to keep a solid spine from last years squad. Davies. Jackson. Potts. Moore. We lack a decent consist left back. Someone in midfield who can read the game know when to tackle track back break the lines do tje simple things etc. No width. Need some wingers/wingbacks who can offer an injection of pace. Two seasons strikers. No back up that can guarentee a few goals.
We've been in relegation form (barring a very short spell early last season) since January 2017 and I don't see the squad being good enough to challenge in this league as it stands. Midfield is a particular concern. That said, most of the players have been bought as development prospects, so maybe they will surprise me. It's very difficult to know how well the manager will do. I'm surprised to see that only two weeks on Saturday from the opening game, Oxford tickets don't appear to be on sale yet (unless I'm looking in the wrong place). Still, if the present team is no good we'll have a 'hall of fame' to look back on!
I know that they ultimately missed out but look how well Shrewsbury did last season. Top of the league most of the season. I can’t believe that anyone would think that their squad is better than ours but I bet their fans are telling each other how they will do it this season. We don’t need much in the way of new players but even those we have should be enough to win more than they lose. I predict top ten all season with a strong push towards the end.
Are we talking about the same squad that was rock bottom earlier that season? That season proves that you shouldn't get carried away with writing things off.
You have to create a team it doesn't just happen. Squad isn't be all and end all. Morais should have done miles better with his squad.
Getting off to a good start is crucial Still think we could do with a central midfielder And letting hammill go was barmy..
The fact is no one really knows what's going to happen. There's too many imponderables. We have a host of players proven at this level or above. Davies, McCarthy, Jackson, Isgrove, Moncur, Potts, Bradshaw, Moore. Throw in Lindsay and Pinnock and McGeehan and you have a squad that should easily flourish. On the other hand they carry the psychological burden of a relegation and we have a new coach who none of us can yet seriously judge. I'm optimistic but no more than that. Fingers crossed and hope for a great season.
On paper we have the makings of a strong L1 squad. Whether the players can adapt to the new manager's system remains to be seen. I'm quietly confident, but the only thing I know for certain is that we'll finish somewhere in the top 24.
