Its tradition. First day defeats are as regular as the open day, as common as Christmas. Its like the cycle of Barnsley F.C . Everyone gradually gets more & more positive and optimistic over the summer. Everyone really misses the football. Then BHAM we get smashed 3-1, 4-2, 4-0 or lose against some team like Crawley or Chesterfield and the moaners are out in force & everyone remembers how sh*t football can be sometimes. Don't worry Mr.Stendel you have a free pass, season starts at Bradford! (happy to be proved wrong but I've been watching this club too long)
Sad really, l love the feeling of optimism leading up to any game, if l ‘knew’ that we were going to lose for days before, l’d be well depressed!
Yes I’ve been thinking this could happen. In fact it wouldn’t surprise me if we don’t get a win in the first 6 matches. Watch this message board light up if it does. But we’ll come good - whether that’s later rather than sooner - who knows.
Hope you are right fellas. Just seems no matter what players and managers we have, the opposition or how our season entails it always has the same outcome
Message boards lit up already, with people predicting doom and gloom. We've even got new posters coming on to join in the glum fest. Club can't win. We sign a load of players and everyone is "underwhelmed", and we don't sign any because we're probably looking for the right ones, and "we're going to get relegated". People need to chill out a bit.
**** that. I'm going into every single game expecting to win this season. Well, apart from Coventry away, cos... Coventry...
I'm not arrogant enough to expect a win, nor am I negative to expect a loss before I've even got any idea what the squad will be never mind the starting 11 for a particular game. I'm also not stupid enough to think that because we lost against a particular team in 1978 or anything along those lines that it has any bearing on an upcoming game or that because we lost an opening day fixture last year it means we will again.
Another tradition is that Oxford always used to do badly at ours, they've only ever won here once and that was near the end of 92-93 when Mel had lost the plot by then.
