Ollie Watkins is an annoying one, because I'm sure we'd have been in for him. I reckon we tried to get away without paying Championship wages, and so just couldn't compete with other clubs in the division for anyone. See also Scowen, Roberts and (Marley) Watkins. Infuriating, because Brentford are the one club who should have been our model.
I'm not sure whether we're on a par with Brentford for wage structure etc. but if you're a young lad with no ties to this area, where are you going to go, London or Barnsley? I think that tends to go against us too sometimes.
I just hope he wants to stay and we hang on to him.... we’ve had a decent pre season with him up front, hopefully that will transfer into the league!
I think our wage structure is rigid & a £1.5m player will command wages too high for our budget. That’s the restrictive element in any ‘big money’ signings imo.
Seems pretty legit . Appears to be one of the biggest sports sites in Germany , and you know what the Germans are like when it comes to stats and everyone having their "paperwork in order " .
Neither. Sounds like we charge a £1.5 million fee for a service (which isn't referred to) and we're questioning whether or not we'd do it cheaper if the right set of circumstances came along. If you break a record you do it bigger, better, faster, longer, but if you break a fee you provide something for less. Would Barnsley break their £1.5m transfer record... Yay! Pedants 'r' us
Depends what they’re being paid..... I’m sure the likes of Winnal would come back for the right pay packet... but it’s just bad business....
If we were well clear at the top of the league come January and looking dead certs for promotion then I could see it happening (investment with a view to playing at a higher level ) . The fact that in my lifetime I've never seen the reds in that situation would lower the percentages of it ever happening .
If we were top at xmas and looking like a dead cert to go up then why would we need to spend that kind of money to strengthen?
Because if your going to be playing at a higher level in six months ( of course in theory ) your going to have to strengthen anyway . If the right player came along you d merely be bringing forward future budgets , spend 1.5 million less in the summer because you ve got your man already .
I agree, if it looks like we are strongly in the running, then a few bob spent then would be wise, to get us over the line & also maybe pick up players cheaper as a L1 side, than as a championship one. New owners won't be unaware of this. I'm still hoping for a couple in through the door & maybe a few out on loan, but I can see that Stendel is still working out his team & a lot of transfer activity might be counter productive. Settled squads usually do better & these have had a season together now.
Spot on. This squad may be good enough for league one but proved it wasn't good enough for the championship. If we are lucky enough to go back up (have my doubts) then we would need to strengthen in all areas for my money. Starting with a decent forward.
