not often do you get mushy peas in a tin that come anywhere near a real chippy's fare. A while ago we bought some and they were excellent , so like the very best chippy ones.... thing is we cannot remember which shop we got them from or what brand they were... Anyone got any Ideas which are the best.... I do intend to ask Stevie the agent of the Celebrity Monkey clan as she is a total 7th Dan black belt when it comes to fish and chips

    "Sloppy peas"

I have heard some interesting vernacular in barnsley and on here but I think that's my favourite of the lot

Never had even a half decent sloppy pey out of a tin but I can highly recommend Lockwood’s frozen ones, fantastic and taste just like those we used to have to soak for a month

I use the lockwoods bag not the microwave pots and I always add a teaspoon of sugar in the pan to take away the tartiness. :)

Went to watch Barnsley away at Reading back in Nov 1995 (a dull 0-0 draw), and went to a chippy a short walk from Elm Park about 2.00pm. Usual order, Fish Chips and Peas. Got the response of "Fish, Chips and what?". Vinegar was the only moist thing they did.

Whitworth's dry soak peas. My mother used to do them with a roast beef joint. Can't remember the last time I had sloppy peas tbh.

Without wishing to sound too George Spicer, I made my own the other day.
    1. Chuck petit pois into a pan, with enough water to just cover them.
    2. Put loads of mint over the top (I've got a little plant outside that grows like crazy)
    3. Cook for 2 mins then blitz in a mini-food processor.
    4. If you've got some double cream lying around you can put a warmed up dollop in their and blitz some more to make it smoother, but 1-3 still taste better than anything from a tin and v.easy to make.

    I’ve never liked mushy peas.

Can’t be a proper Yorkshireman I guess, always preferred curry from the chippy, or beans and gravy with a battered sausage/spam.

I do know however that my mother rates the tins of mushy peas from aldi highly. And she does like them - though as she puts it, they don’t like her.

Them's not mushy peas. They might be sloppy but proper mushies are made with dried marrowfat peas. And yes, you do sound like George.

My grandma used to cook Sunday dinner for all of us, looking back there must have been about 15 of us each week, this was in the late seventies. She soaked over night the peas and made her own mushy peas and we had them as a starter with homemade Yorkshire puddings and gravy. Nicest thing I've ever eaten.

Marrow fat peas soaked in a bucket with bicarb for a few days. Boil em for a couple of days then eat them for a couple of days and fart for a couple of weeks.
