That is a well argued, logically presented post, old mate. The only bit that I disagree with is presenting the case as a one way street, as it were. Optimists stifling the debate against the pessimists. It's been my experience that the opposite is also just as true. Unfortunately, the more an individual bangs a specific drum, especially on a daily basis, the more other folk become entrenched with their views. I accept I am guilty of this more than any other poster and have to accept that my stance is one that stifles debate. In the future, I'll try to engage others far better than I have during this Summer. Hopefully others from a polar opposite viewpoint will do the same.

I don't think I am alone in thinking that the ability of ALL the players wasn't in doubt it was the application and effort that got us relegated apart from bradshaw who proved time and time again that he wanted to wear the red shirt

Got to say I agree. Would not be one bit surprised to see us struggling at the wrong end of the table again, the players - no matter how you try and dress it up - just aren't good enough.

For what it's worth I agree with Conan to an extent. The players did at times roll over and a lack of effort cost us big time. There was also a very clear lack of ability from the squad as whole.

The player of the year vote was a joke last season. People had no idea who to vote for because not one player had covered themselves in glory so in the end it went down to looking at who had played the most games and hadn't been absolutely pathetic. Winning by default really.
Young player of the year which had previously been won by players like Alfie mawson (58 apps), Ryan Kent (47 apps), Mason Holgate (22 apps) and Chris Barker (35 apps) was Last season won by Ben Williams who hadn't played a single minute for us. And this was in a squad which was, as claimed by the owner, full of youth. A young squad, signed because of their ages and not one of them were worthy of the young player of the year award so they gave it to a lad who had never played a game.

I believe that the reason a lot of people suddenly started saying 'we will walk this league' after it was all but confirmed we were relegated and over the summer is because they cannot face the idea that we will struggle. I'm not saying they are right or wrong but that a lot of people are in some kind of self preservation mode of denial where if they convince themselves the players are good it won't get them down. I fully understand that thought process because it's human nature.

I dont think this squad will walk the league, I think we will struggle as the squad is IMO weaker than last season. The head cos h has changed but he is still working to the same blue print. So much so that in his first friendlies he played practically the same firs team as the previous season.

I hope that the manager has the balls to say to those at the top 'this is my team' and play how he wants to and I hope that he helps the players grow and grow quickly. We very well could win the league but it certainly isn't guaranteed. based on the actual evidence and not our hearts it isn't likely. That's what Conan was saying and he isn't wrong.

See I don't think anyone will have any issue with or shoot down what you've said there because you've given your rationale and personally I agree with a great deal of it. Being critical of the team isn't the reason he gets shot down, it's the way he goes about it.

Good point that about last years young player of the year. Seems crackers that a fella who has never played for us won it. What was the voting criteria? Surely Jack walton was more worthy? Played well for U23s and broke into first team. Or even Hedges, Lindsey or McCarthy. All young lads who had an impact at various times on the first team.

There was no voting. The club took that vote out of the fans hands and chose the winner themselves. I have my own theories as to why they chose who they did but I'll keep those to myself.

I know the old PotY criteria was a minimum of 20 games (and that was usually at the time of voting). McBurnie made 16 starts for his 9 goals I think (and 1 as sub).

So agree it was grim all round.

I honestly can’t think of one reason to for it to go to a player who hasn’t even made a first team appearance. The more I think about it the stranger it is. Has it ever happened before? Assume not as we normally get a vote on it.

There have been seasons in the past where we haven't really played any young players much, so it's possible it could have happened then. Can't recall a particular instance, but neither can I recall all the winners of the young player of the year - not even close.

I am more optimistic than Conan but can't disagree with him about last season.

A promotion season would be redemption
