Take away the broadcast revenue though and it doesnt take a genius to work out that football will implode. No business should be made up of more than 10% from 1 source of revenue.............

Just to add...as much as some fans bemoan our lack of spending I personally dont mind it as our business model is the way forward as we are a profitable business in most areas with or without TV revenue which is how it should be. All that it needs now is for the PL and EFL to throw the book at overspenders by a hefty points deduction........oh wait......that might diminish the appeal to the world TV football viewing public and then reduce revenues. The amount of spending makes it less sustainable for the clubs involved and more lucrative a TV proposition. Lets do it our way like we seem to always have and go against the grain

Sky Sports. The new opium of the masses. Hour after hour of nonsense, non threatening male presenters and eye candy female presenters spooning warm diarrhoea (as Stewart Lee would have it) into our mouths all day long. Watford v Bournemouth hyped as the greatest football game since 1966.....except of course for when one of their darling big 6 money generators are playing.
    Horrible.

I wonder how they discuss the world cup or do they just pretend it's not happening because they don't have broadcasting rights to it?

Presumably from the angle of which of the players play in or might be moving to the PL.
I used to have Sky Sports and had Sky Sports news on in the background a lot until I realised it was utter Hello magazine style anodyne pap. I miss the golf and the cricket but realise that they've stolen it from me rather than that they offer it as a bonus. It used to be free to air.

And yet loads of people are prepared to pay well over a grand a year for it. And then get excited when they get offered a "deal".

Stating the bleedin' obvious - What the article fails to mention....

Home and away fans filling a stadium create atmosphere and generate excitement
A full stadium and crowd atmosphere creates the spectacle.
    Spectacle 'makes' the occasion special.

22 players playing in an empty stadium with the loudest sound being the referee's whistle, no matter how good the skills etc on display ,' do not a spectacle make' . TV revenue would evaporate. You might as well go down to the local rec and support a local league side.

They've stuffed cricket too. Most casual cricket fans can't watch it any more. The euphoria of the 2005 Ashes series has gone for good, and village cricket is dying on its feet. Kids these days haven't a clue who Joe Root is, but back then they worshipped Flintoff, Pietersen and the others. It's an utter shambles at village level, with clubs and teams folding all over the place, and other clubs just managing to hold things together by persuading OAPs to make a comeback. That's the price we pay for exclusive Sky coverage.

Anyone fancy a game on Saturday?

Actually the article does mention that, but anyway I agree.

Same with F1 (whatever some people think of it as a Sport) Nearly all the teams are based in the UK and yet the money men threaten to take the British GP away and Sky have an exclusive deal for another 4 years, by which time viewing figures (and advertising revenues presumably) will have plummeted (Bernie the poison dwarf responsible for that one) .

Around 4.50 a week for the Sky Sports package is still a good deal. This year they have the Carribean T20 off BT Sport too. Sky aren't the problem. It's channels like BT Sport and online services like Eleven and Amazon Prime starting up and pinching sports off them that's making it more expensive. When only Sky Sports were around and everything was in the same place, instead of spread access multiple platforms it was great.

Wages as a percentage of turnover. And there I was thinking that they went about things the right way when getting promoted. They're just a big a bunch of cheats as Brighton.

Most people couldn't decide if it was great or not, because the vast majority of people couldn't watch it. They then found other things to do with their time and lost interest. In 2005 we had dozens of kids clamouring to come to our club to play cricket. Now they just laugh when we ask if they're interested. We had 5 junior teams then. We've got none now. It's a total disaster.

An absence of fans at games would easily be resolved, they'd just edit in a few chants. You could even go for some sponsor friendly ones, "I only drink Coca-Cola", it'd be great.

I would have thought Barnsley would have a higher percentage than Sheffield United when it comes to gate receipts as a percentage of turnover. Especially as we can't keep the club shop stocked with shirts and we regularly run out of food and drink.

Just read further down where the Man U comparison is.
    * Barnsley were the only club in the Championship not to disclose turnover in their accounts, hence there are only 23 in the graphic.

    Why am I not surprised?
