Now I'm convinced you're a spoof.

Even if it's not your sort of thing, to dismiss it as "*****" is ludicrous beyong belief. Personally I love it. It's way before my time, but as a massive fan of all electronic music and being a part of the late 90's and early 2000's scene, I thought it only right to trace the modern stuff back to its roots. Northern Soul was a massive part of the explosion of early 90's indie and rave, which then morphed into techno, trance and other genres ten years later. Not just the music, but the whole movements. Its importance cannot be overstated.

Even if you're not a fan of the music, I very strongly suggest that you watch the film Northern Soul. It's absolutely blindingly good.
