I'll ignore your post, my 'work shy' dad generally worked 12 hour days, 6 days pw to earn a decent wage 'cos he was on the top. He was also there in 1975 when 5 men were killed after an explosion underground and he was there when they produced over 1m tons of coal per year in the late 70's early 80's.
He’s just a wind up mate I’d ignore him if I were you. For every 100 posts he does 99.9 are wind ups . His mate Tony who he bleats on about sacked miners who had been arrested for picking coal during the miners strike . That’s the calibre of his company
The name rings a bell but tbh my memories not all that these days . If I saw him I’d probably know him straight away.
Ah Tony Griffin,They say don’t talk ill of the dead, but he wasn’t a popular bloke from his peers to the button man, Acknowleged as being a fine pitman who worked his way up, but he was not a people person. Used to follow the picket vans around Darfield and encouraged scabs to turn up at Union meetings. Had the pit painted red, white and blue at the end of the strike.
I worked with a Les Schofield for a time. Seem to remember he was our chargehand or Chargey as we used to say.
He wasn’t a popular bloke because he had a shocking culture to contend with. In person he was a top top fella. One of the best pit men I’ve ever met.
He was an unpopular person cos he was a first class lovely person and not just at pit life level as many will confirm.
So all the 1800 men (at its height) at the pit were a shocking culture apart from one very disliked individual. Now I can see why you were part of his gang. I refer you to Marlon’s post about the sacking of miners for coal picking.
Interesting that you purport to be good friends with a bloke who hadn’t got any because of his vile nature
Used to go deep sea fishing with an Alan (possibly Thompson) also a trician at either Dearne Valley or Houghton. He later bought a hotel in Blackpool.
Can remember a similar theme video posted on here a few years ago in which a meeting was held at Darfield and Mitchell’s WMC against the closure of Darfield Main Colliery. Lots of my old mates in that too . Wonder if it’s still available . I could sit through these videos for ages remembering some of my dear old mates a lot of which alas are no longer with us.
There the 2. Alan Hawcroft has a brother in Alan Hawcroft he's the one. Alan had a brother in law called Ian Thompson. I have known Bluto for years and it were him that brought Alan to our fishing club many years ago. PS Barry didn't like being called Bluto though.
Are there are places online I can see photos or vids of either Barrow or Dodworth pits? My grandad worked there.
Soz mate, try these http://www.archive-images.co.uk/gal...lfield/image/22/Barrow_Colliery_Barnsley_A_JR http://coalmine.proboards.com/thread/1399/dodworth
Turns out, my brother took an old VHS along to Experience Barnsley museum at Tarn Hall. They’ve copied it and uploaded it to FB by the looks of things. Phil Auckland did the filming and gave my brother a copy.
