We know Mawson went on to be a top player.
But our centre backs are solid now.
So out of the 2016 promotion wining team there is only the passing ability of Hourihane and the guile of Hammill that is missing from our present team.
    And Hammill is still available.
Other than that we are comparable with that winning team.
Add Hammill and I think we should do it.
    • 1Davies
    • 7Scowen
    • 4Roberts
    • 26Mawson
    • 22Williams
    • 34Isgrove - for Watkins
    • 11Brownhill
    • 8Hourihane
    • 20Hammill
    • 9Winnall
    • 18Fletcher - forToney

We miss Hourihane’s set piece deliveries, Hammill’s ability to put a good cross in and Winnall’s finishing. Final ball / shot let us down badly yesterday.

That’s not to say this team has qualities that the promotion team lacked. Cavare looks set to have a great season, Dougall is our Kante and Isgrove can’t get in the side this time round.

Scowen was and will remain the hardest player to replace out of that entire squad for me

Two poor full backs, a centre half that’s constantly not goal side, a goalkeeper that obviously isn’t into football and a winger who walks off with 5 mins to go at 0-0.

    What?

Cavaré was excellent against Oxford, Bradford, Blackpool and in the first half yesterday. Even in the second half he never looked troubled and kept a clean sheet. Sure, his crossing left a lot to be desired but to label him poor off the back of that is pure fallacy.

The same goes for Davies, Pinillos, and whichever centre half you’re referring to. We’ve kept three clean sheets on the bounce in the league and haven’t even looked like conceding.

Thiam was withdrawn after 83 minutes and we played until 96 but don’t let that spoil your argument, DT.

Agree Scowen was great for us.
But Dougall has more or less filled those boots.

All in all I think the left foot of Hourihane at dead ball situations and the guile of Hammill is the only positives from then that we don’t have now.

There's not a single player who I would have from the current team over what we had when we got promoted. If there is for you, who is it?

If we put Hourihane and Hammill in this squad I believe we would now have a better squad.
As it is now we are missing a couple of players.
But I don’t think we are that far off being a better team than the 2016 team.
We definitely have more physical presence and power all over the field and especially going forward.

That's fair enough nudge. But on a player by player basis, who would you take from our current team in replacement to what we had in our promotion winning team? If it's nobody, and I can't see anyone better than what we had two years ago, why do you think this side is better?

    Sooner Cavaré than George Williams.

Linsday is at least as good as Roberts.

Both Bradshaw and Moore are better than Fletcher or Toney.

Who's going to score Winnall's 23 league goals?

If you think Cavares quality then there’s no helping you. He’s constantly stood about, made Potts look poor yesterday because he had no one to pass to. Amount of times he’s not interested in getting back into position is frightening to, cost us one day.

Pinnilos is very poor, only think is he’s still better than Fryers. Pinnock looks decent because of his recovery challenges but if he wasn’t all over the shop to begin with he wouldn’t need to recover. Lets the ball bounce far too often aswell.

And therin lies the issue with people looking at Hammill with rose spectacles, Isgrove was great in 2006. Time moves on

If you think that Cavaré wasn’t excellent against Oxford, Bradford, Blackpool and in the first half yesterday then you’re watching a different game.

Did you rate McCarthy? I’m going to assume that the answer is a resounding yes.

If we had Hourihane and Hammill now then this team is better.
Without those 2 - then possibly the 2016 is better.
