I quite the use of 'z' instead of 's' in words (jeopardize for instance). Also, the pronunciation of the letter (zee rather than zed). Zed Zed Top would have been a rubbish band name. Same for the rapper Jay Zed.
People on here should know that one at least. They do tend to do most of their talking out of it at least!
I remember circa 1985 in an English lesson at Kirk Balk school, we talked about American English, and everyone was laughing about their use of 'Awesome'. It was generally considered ridiculous at that time. Usually we look back on fashions and expressions used in the past with a hint of embarrassment... but in this case we were cooler then than we are now!
This thread is awesome. I must tell you guys though that Britishisms are becoming more common is the US too, an American friend of mine recently used the term "daft" to describe someone. People say cheers more often, people use London slang phrases like "fam." In the midwest they refer to soda as "pop" which I'm pretty sure is a British thing. One thing I don't understand is why British people refer to private schools as "public schools" when isn't the whole idea to not be a public school?
It always used to be subversive on US TV to add a reference to ******. IIRC "Married with Children" had a few references to relatives living in "****** County"..
"Like" Used constantly. Like, it's dreadful, and it's … like, sooooo widespread now. Like, I don't know what to do. Like, ya'know. Saying "like" so inappropriately so often should be classed as a crime against humanity with a mandatory life sentence in jail. It's the only way to rid this evil!!!
Customer service. Traditionally Brits have been rubbish at this. Now, every company I deal with send me a f**king email asking me 'How did we do today?', 'Would you recommend us to a friend?', 'Please score us out of 10.' Even when I go into a clothes shop, some youth, without a hint of irony, says 'have a great day'. Personally, I preferred it when Brits clearly didn't give a s**t: better that than pretending to care.
I deal with a company based in India on a regular basis, and have to contact them by phone or online chat. It's so obvious that they are trained to ask about my day. I say trained, it's a copy and paste most of the time. Its so annoying, and I'd wish they were just honest and say they don't give a crap about my day or the issue I'm dealing with for that matter.
Good - because that's what I am! A grumpy old fart. Edit: No sooner had I posted that, than I received an email from the supermarket I shopped at this morning asking me to fill in a survey to assess how well they are doing...aargh!!
Public schools are just that - open to anyone as long as they have the right money. As opposed to Grammar Schools where you have to pass an exam to gain entry, even though they are free.
