We've had some shocking ones at Oakwell over the past few seasons, added to that the referees decision in the England game tonight to disallow Welbeck's goal, is it fair to assume that the standard of refereeing in general has gone to pot and this is what we can expect at every football match from now on?

Perfectly good goal. De Gea simply dropped the ball . Not even remotely suspect. Very poor refereeing

John stones perfectly time tackle free kick and booking, for me refs have gone downhill and want to be centre of attention, still think they should have microphones like rugby. Football seems so secretive at times like with stoppage time why can’t the clock be stopped with injuries or subs so everyone knows how long is left!

Just walked out of Wembley, didn’t get a good view of the welbeck goal but the stones booking was a disgrace, a cleaner tackle you’ll barely see.

Strong feeling of injustice at the tube station put it that way.

Have they said how Luke shaw is?

I saw on bbc sport that he was being treated at Wembley by the medics there instead of hospital! Kane said on sky interview that the ref 100% bottled the wellbeck goal

And yet they still shake hands with the idiots at the end. Ignoring them might send a message or probably not. I wonder if England players shook hands with De Gea for his blatant cheating. Drops the ball while climbing all over Welbeck and then feigns injury to reinforce the ref’s incompetence

Bad and inconsistent refereeing doesn't just exist in football but other sports too.

Followers of tennis will know that Carlos Ramos is one of those who seems to like causing controversy and thinks he is more important than the players. The latest incident, whilst Serena Williams overreaction cannot be excused, spoilt the US Open final.
He is widely disliked and treated with suspicion by many of the top players for randomly choosing the moment to give code violations, often at key points in a match. Most pumped up players full of adrenalin are bound to react. William's , Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and many others have all fallen foul of this egotist on numerous occasions. And yet he still umpires high profile matches

The trouble is, like the Football authorities, the Tennis Federations put themselves above the players who, after, all are what fans come to see, not the overbearing officials, the best being those who are relatively 'invisible' during a match.
Where are the likes of Pierluigi Collina nowadays?

We had an absolute stone wall, nailed on penalty denied yesterday too.

The trip in the first half? That was blatant for me but after the penalty last week normal service has been resumed.

i find the most annoying things with referees are the inconsistencies and also when they give free kicks on things that clearly didn't happen. I can tolerate things not seen, but there seems to be an increase in things given for offences that clearly didn't happen. The ref in the England match was awful, he would still have disallowed the goal with VAR as he made a clear decision that he would penalise Welbeck for being dove on despite him ducking out of the way and therefore would have still given the free kick. Thats pure incompetence. The ref for us yesterday seemed to give many fouls against us that he waved play on for if it was in our favour including the penalty call which for me was a clear one.

Yes! We did! I haven't seen it mentioned much on here (though I haven't read every thread) but from my vantage-point it looked nailed on.
