Even if they have to ask for a fire certificate due to regs, and they didn’t have one, why not just let them in and tell them to call for the flag back after the match?

If true this steward is single-handedly trying to undo all the good work being done in the Family Stand this season.

How? For a start he's nowhere near the family stand. Secondly what age are these 'kids'? Thirdly where are the parents?

They weren't refused entry, the tweet is misleading. All that happened is they were told they couldn't take the flag in, they still watched the game

In one part of the ground we are trying to improve the match day experience for the kids. In another part of the ground someone is doing the opposite. It shouldn't really need an explanation.

Or they could be enforcing the rules and some people don't like it?

That's why I said originally "if true".

I totally get the issue and it needs sorting, but insulting the man because of his size and stating he should be twatted are simply not called for, we are better than that. A call to the club, an email or letter would be an appropiate action as you have a justified gripe and have his details.

I walked into east stand lower last season just before kick off when Toby was doing the abseil from the roof. I took my phone out to take a picture and a female steward came up to me and told me to put my phone away as I wasn't allowed to use my phone inside the ground. I laughed at her and pointed out 3/4 of the thousands of home fans all had their phones out taking pictures. Jobsworth.

It doesn’t t just happen at Oakwell, give any inadequate a sniff of power and they have a licence to bully. I’m was at the 2011 FA Cup final between Stoke and Man City, I was in the Club Wembley area where there is a ban on replica shirts, woman in front of me has a little kid in her arms, no older than 18-24 months, cute as a button in his little red & white striped shirt, the steward refused them entry and the woman had to go to the Wembley shop to get the kid a different shirt. I’m convinced that a lot of stewards are only in that line of work because they lack the qualifications needed to be pond-life.

Or could it be that thry will lose their jobs if they dont enforce the rules that their employer tells them to and that the customer agreed to abide by?

If I had a choice between upsetting somebidy who refuses to sit down or losing my job I know who's day I'd rather ruin.

I think some of them lack common sense. Using the example of Toby abseiling from the East Stand, I'm sure Barnsley FC have told the stewards to stop people videoing the match, not everything else.

When you order flags online now the fire certificate is usually stitched on the back. Well ours we ordered in the summer had.

I agree, some of them are just stupid but a lot of time there is this weird siege mentality with fans that stewards are ALWAYS wrong and the fans can do whatever they want. Just look at how often they are abused for trying to stop people standing up or dealing with drunks, it isn't just the ones involved who abuse them it's large large numbers who all chant get a proper job or we'll do what we want.

I don't understand it personally, the stewards aren't the enemy. I'd rather have a steward watching a fire exit for me than have a drunk imbecile jumping up and down any day but we all know which one gets protection from other fans at the time.

I used to steward at Oakwell and had a really good team that backed everyone up, however, that went downhill quickly when new ones started with no common sense and went off running when they got asked to do something they didn’t like, I still go to matches and think it’s sad to see the same stewards there using that job as only income! I was once told off for shouting at a refbrinvtolf I should know better as I had been one of them, I replied I used to be not now! Plus if you can’t have phones out in the ground tell some of the stewards who are on them during the game or taking selfies to put on Facebook whilst working!

Find most stewards very amiable at away games. But their are those that see it as a position of power and seek out the weakest to confront. In the next breath some receive dogs abuse when totally unwarranted. Re. The flags. most clubs ask for fire certificates and those that are regularly taken away have genuine or dare I say fake certs. Report steward 180 to the club. Who would then take the issue to the employer if not the club itself. Would doubt anything would happen to said steward. But I am sure he’d have to be on best behaviour in future. Guilty or not.

The only thing that's required from the stewards and those being stewarded is...
Common sense and courtesy to those around them.
    Job done.

Don't forget my incident a few years ago when I tried to give a packet of KitKatKubes to Ian Mac.
Demeaning yet funny... depending which side you saw !
    Stewards doing a proper job.
