A suspected heart attack at the age of 64.

One of the Ipswich greats of that team nurtured by Bobby Robson and he played for England. A sobering thought is that when his playing days ended early because of injury he lived with his wife in a council owned bungalow. Hard to imagine that situation for top footballers today isn’t it?

Agree with all of the above and most football fans of that era could probably rattle off the Ipswich lineup which, when you think of it, is remarkable. Just shows how well respected Bobby and his team were.

I used to watch Ipswich in 1974 when at Essex Uni.
They were a very good side full of well known players.
    Very sad news about KB.

You were at Essex about 15 years before me. Back in the days of cars being dumped in the fountain in square 4 and proper student sit ins!

Still never seen another paternoster lift to this day like the one in the library.

We had a Paternoster lift n Lecturing Theatre block at Lees Uni in the 80s. I think H&S has put a stop to them now.

Yes second in league twice to Liverpool and Villa who were both European Cup winners possibly best side not to win the League though Newcastle fans may disagree. Ironic that journey man pro Roger Osborne scored winning goal in 78 Cup Final

Sheffield Uni arts tower had one as well when I was there, which was in the late 90's. Not sure if it's still there but it was absolutely legendary. Nobody was quite sure what would happen if you rode right up to the top and round, but no one dared try it just in case you got mangled by a load of winching equipment. Realistically that's probably not what would have happened.

It was a bit nerve wracking going round the top but its ok. Did it once at the Essex library by accident. Got talking, then fumbled in my pocket as the top floor approached, got distracted and the other bloke jumped off. I left it too late and had to go with it. You just rumble round the big cog at the top and down you go.

Course we tried it a few times more after that. Looks a bit odd though when some others come out at top floor level to head down and they see you coming down!

In 10 years or so I'll be doing a pub quiz and one of the questions will be, "Who invented the Paternoster Lift?"

And I'll be adamant it was Kevin Beattie
