Just watched the Newcastle game. What the hell were all their fans doing outside the ground when there was plenty of space on the Brewery side of the away end. Campbell referred to as the "black winger", and just after half time one of our players goes over the ball, after the whistle, in front of the brewery and it's just overlooked. Some nice football on show though, and Newcastle missed some sitters
Just watched the Newcastle game too. Great picture quality for a game of that vintage. Remember the game well. Lots of trouble on the day with Newcastle fans. Didn't the Manx Arms get trashed, or was that another game?
We will have only had a couple of turnstiles open. Same thing happened at a lot of aways I went to. Stoke & Rotherham being ones that spring to mind.
Before the roads changed, they used to get off the A1 at Ponty and usually stopped at Hemsworth cross hills for a drink. Every bugger in the north east must have had a transit van back then, as it seemed to be the preferred mode of transport.
Yep. It's funny with football. They were dark times with trouble, racism, etc but now is too sanitised. Just gotta put up with it, or sack it off. I'm too addicted.
I think what's changed is that watching football is less spontaneous now. Back then you could largely just decide to turn up for the big games. One of my first away games was the 1-0 defeat at Huddersfield. Massive crowd for the 4th division but we just went and paid on the gate. The thought of 7 or 8 thousand away fans just rolling up is unthinkable now, let alone selling 16 to 20 thousand tickets like at Anfield. The mob mentality of the 70s and early 80s was very appealing to us young lads. We felt safe with the hoards of older fans, but we're always wary because of the tales being passed around about violence.
Yes your right, killed a parrot int pub(reight hard backstuds) loads of trouble before match, I don't condone it but we gave as good as we got. would have rather had a pint or two n some banter but those Gordies thought otherwise
I was told it was the Ring O'Bells but I didn't make the match so don't know. And I think that was the first match after the fence in front of the Kop went up. Can anyone confirm?
These are fantastic uploads, thanks for doing them. Such vivid memories of that early 1980s era. The crowds, the atmosphere, and a stellar team to boot. Lovely to see and hear Bobby Collins too on the Liverpool video. Did a remarkable job for us as manager during arguably the toughest period the town has experienced. Little man but the biggest of hearts.
Brilliant as usual Shane, but you know how to make me feel old! - my wife was pregnant with our first child at the time of that Newcastle match; NTUTyke is 36 now, but obviously he was brought up in the correct manner and he will be at Oakwell on Saturday with his wife, son and daughter as well as my daughter, her daughter, my wife and last (and certainly least), me!
Brilliant stuff. Its worth it to here memories from you guys who were at the games. That Liverpool game was in my first season.
Saints away in the previous round was brilliant. Packed little quirky ground, and it was one of those special electric atmospheres under the floodlights. They were riding high in the top flight and scored very early on. I thought that was that, but we went in 2-1 up at half time and seemed to defend for the whole of the 2nd half. My memories are of young Aggie with hair scoring and winning a penalty, our fans bating Shilton in the 1st half, bother outside and a love in at Leicester forest with Sunderland fans who had won at Chelsea.
My first season was 1969/70, better gloss over the first 10 years, although I'm proud to say I was one of the 2,000 or so who went Oakwell in the early seventies.
