Ye you me and 5,000 others according to other fans in pubs etc . t least half of those would have died
Brilliant Shane. Didn't go to the Liverpool game but was probably sat on the wall downside of the ponty end for the Newcastle match. That Leicester game I remember like it was yesterday, me and the mates were just making our way towards the exit so we could make a run for the bus when Archie pops up with that belter. Long walk back to Kek in the end but worth it, then West Ham in 4th round on the Sunday. Rammell getting a hatrick, winning 4-1 then onto Maine Road
Yeah it's a bit of a forgotten game. A bit like Spurs and Arsenal away around that time. Although we lost both of them. They don't really get much of a mention.
Probably up there in my top 5 barnsley fc experiences: had me dad's suit top on (which was strangely fashionable for a couple of months) and ended up getting covered in grease from the fencing. Daley (RIP) managing to climb on to the pitch at the final whistle and getting a 'shoeing'.
Missed the Leicester game - was this the replay - had a ticket for away game but it was postponed- gutted!
Going back to the Leicester game, David Oldfield put on one of the best performances I've seen by an opposition player at Oakwell. The guy was immense on the night. Even in extra time he was a real handful for our defenders, in an Ashley Ward stylee.
I was an occasional visitor to The Dell in those days as I was living near Salisbury so it wasn't too far to travel. Oakwell was 200 miles away so I didn't get to many of our games. I was a volunteer at a local home for young people with learning disabilities and sometimes took 7 or 8 of them to watch the Saints in a mini bus. It's incredible looking back because I had no social work-type qualifications, or CRB checks, but they obviously trusted me, being the nice RAF guy from just down the road, so what could go wrong Luckily nothing ever did go wrong and I am proud that I brought a bit of sunshine into a few young lives who liked watching Match of the Day but had never been to a live game before I took them. However, when the Reds played there in that cup game I went alone, and WHAT a night that was. I couldn't believe that we were turning over such a well-established First Division side. It was backs to the wall a lot of the time but still a great victory. I don't think there were any cameras at this game - I certainly don't recall seeing any highlights on South Today the next day.
There wasn't much passing the ball around at the back in those days. Defenders were real men who hoofed it. Or gave it back to the keeper who hoofed it.
