Which is why the Tories scrapped the subsidies. All their supporters in Dore and Totley objected to subsidising buses for the plebs.
A real shame when they got rid of the aqueduct. I’m all for progress and modernisation but you loose a real sense of character when such buildings are destroyed. [/QUOTE]
There is a video by Ian Nairn (well before my time) which is worth a watch. The guy is (was) amazing and so passionate. At one point he says something along the lines of "I like Barnsley, I just wish it wasn't such a dump" when referring to a mess in the town centre, where the court house car park now is. It goes on to show Midland Street with the arches which looked lovely in the video.
I lived at Worsbro and regularly caught the bus from bottom end of Midland Street. We might even have been on the same bus at some point! Small world, innit? One thing about cheap fares is that is encouraged us kids to get out and about. Hoyland Sports Centre, Chapletown Baths, Silkstone Golf Course (on the hunt for lost golf balls). You could get to just about anywhere for next to nothing. Can't remember staying in the house much at all. If social media had been introduced then, I reckon it would have bombed.
She scrapped the South Yorkshire County Council along with other Metropolitan boroughs which killed the cheap fares.
2p to go local 4p to donny or Barnsley from Bolton on dearne. Many a time we went off for the day all over as it was cheap and you could get anywhere
My mates girlfriend worked at the donut shop he'd bring them to work for us at C&G Carlisle's what a treat
