I work 6 days a week , its damn hard .We've managed to put a little bit away for her over the last 21 years that along with their savings has gone towards a deposit . I don't know you and wouldn't comment on your circumstances so please don't comment in mine without knowing the facts . The poster said kids have got **** all chance if getting on the housing ladder , well that's simply not true .

 

You should look into why living costs are increasing.

Unis are as much a big corperate enterprise as they are 'learning centres'

I have 3 kids, now 13, 15 and 17. Each have had £10 a month put into their account from their grandparents (£20 a month each) from birth. Last time I checked they had between £5.5K and £7K each in their Junior ISA’s. This is go towards getting on the housing ladder or uni.

Fortunate to have grandparents who’ve had the foresight and ability to do this. Me and the missus should probably have done the same. £10 a month is what, 3 pints of beer? Half a takeaway?

A child doesn’t just become 18 overnight, you’ve had 18 years to help prepare them for adult life. This also includes financially as well as mentally.

My kids have pretty much the same, I'm hoping that by the time they're 18 that they'll have about 10k each...which is no where near enough for uni or a deposit on a house...or both...

I totally understand the point you're making, but even with good, solid savings an 18 year old would still need a loan to get through uni and they'd be light years away from a 20% deposit on even a £100k house.

 

I think its interesting in how different people view a government and expectation of it. Market forces, demand, and ever increasing globalisation have a huge impact on our lives and opportunities. Government choices have some impact, but over a lifetime I'd estimate other factors make us richer or poorer than government ones. But i'd say the biggest driver of our quality of life is ourselves, what we do and the choices we make.

Undoubtedly, there are some people being taken advantage of with the likes of zero hours contracts, but there is an agility and platforms for people to generate income and wealth that weren't in existence just 15-20 years ago.

For me govt should be a safety net and protector when factors beyond all our control hit the fan, and aside from that, they should run services which serve us all. Obviously there are nuances of policy and which groups certain parties favour. But I don't expect them to provide us with things that feed the ever growing self entitlement that now pervades society. That all politicians (maybe to slightly varying degrees) have that same self entitlement, I fear governments true purpose is a long time lost.

 

If your daughter is 21 then she could only have graduated a couple of months ago. Are you seriously expecting us to believe that since June she has started a new job, gone house-hunting, sorted a mortgage out and moved in? And all that after saving for years while a student? Which fairies at the bottom of which garden told you all that?

So now she's gone from taking responsibility for her own finances to being propped up by a parent. Your pathetic lies just betray the fact that you have no idea about students' finances and buying a house. The fact that you have to tell such childish lies to support your political arguments says a lot about your political arguments.

I bet your other children are a 15 years-old multi-billionaire investment analyst and a 12 years-old astronaut. Everyone else's kids should try harder.

This board is just a nasty angry place these days. For pity's sake, we all have differences of opinion but have we lost all ability to discuss them without being nasty and personal.

I lobbed my two pennorth in at the start with my view of John Mcdonnell, then kicked myself hard for breaking my rule on not getting involved in politics threads on here, and have stayed out of it since.

But reading through some of the replies on here makes my eyes water. There is no excuse for being abusive. It is driving people away.

 

And there we have it! For all your high and mighty 'holier than thou' intellectual claptrap you resort to unfounded accusations, foul language and unfounded insults.

As regards "hating migrants of colour" I do not and you have absolutely no evidence to back that accusation up. Ironic how someone who has no idea of the situation in Italy except what he reads in papers like the Guardian and sees on the BBC feels qualified to judge that someone is racist for simply stating the facts. Little Englander? I chose to move to another country and absorb the culture and chose Italy because, like most expats I have ecountered here, came because they like the culture and the people and did not come simply for the climate.

People who actually know me and have met me laughed when I told them I have been described as a hypocrite and racist by someone I have never met. Your bigotry and ideology clearly indicates it is not I who has a sad and meaningless life. After all my posts, unlike yours, do not reflect bitterness and a resentful view of life and in fact I lead a pleasant and fulfilling life. Jog on!

Whilst I disagree with Plobby and pointed out the fact his daughter can only just have graduated myself, some of this is well out of order Seattle.

He was economic with the truth re his daughter but the end of your post is over aggressive, and whilst I see some of your point there is no real need for that.

 

Like others this is a bit OTT and uncalled for. I don't agree with Plobby's viewpoint but wasn't any need to get personal like that.

Im struggling to manage financially every day (it is incredibly stressful), work hard helping others for the NHS and find some of the comments on here a bit out of touch and offensive, however i dont feel the need to attack someone.

This entire thread, and all future political threads, needs deleting. The level of abuse between posters is, in my opinion, unacceptable. Why on earth do people think that different standards of behaviour apply on the internet? Despite what many people claim, the internet IS real life. Grow up and debate politely and civilly, or stop posting. It can't be good for your health to get so wound up about stuff you can't change.

 

The money is going on all the wrong places.

It wasnt that long ago there were staff striking becuasr the employers contribution was being lowered to 18%

So average uk wage is 25k. *** packet maths suggests its about half a tuition fee a year vanishes into a golden pot.

The political threads on here are getting worse last month I made a joke of diane Abbott's adding up and got accused of been a rasict which is something I defiantly aren't I offered to meet the said poster and prove I aren't he carried on accusing and I got no apology.
