Just watched the highlights for the first time in a few years. I’d not noticed this before until tonight but Keith Brown was at fault for the first 3 Ipswich goals plus lost out in a foot race with Reuser for the final goal that ended the game. Never realised how bad of a game he had
Interesting - not seen highlights for a bit. On the day, he didn’t seem to do that bad. You can’t blame any player for that final goal really - we were knackered and pushed up well high. They were our bogey team that year, and heading into that final I wasn’t confident. Looking back though, our squad was quality that season. It’s a shame Bassett didn’t get the job the season before instead of Hendrie.
Was just a shame that we didn't keep Arjan De Zeeuw for that season, I think we'd have gone up automatically if we had done. Still some fantastic football and fantastic memories.
I thought the penalty miss was the pivotal point , if we had scored we would have gone in at half time winning , instead it gave Ipswich a great boost & belief , but hey ho , its no good pointing the finger of blame at anyone , it does not change a thing .
With the way the Ipswich fans were that day, I didn’t mind losing to them in a way. They were all friendly and not a sign of trouble. Bit different to Cardiff and Millwall games at the New Wembley......
During the preseason they had a question and answer thing on the the old bfc website where you could send questions in and they asked Bassett them. They asked him my question of why haven’t you kept de Zeeuw. He replied that he didn’t see him as good value for money and felt he could bring in defenders just as good on less money. I presume he meant Steve Chettle lol
Yep. Mental to think we voluntarily got rid. Apparently Bassett also wanted to sign Brett Angell the season after.
Keith Brown. My word it amazes me still that he was a professional footballer. We should have gone up second, we had the best run in of city, Ipswich and us yet still ended up fourth. Loved Harry Bassett at the time but in hindsight I think we were good despite him - our goals conceded number was woeful, and we weren’t a one man side but look how poor we were when hignett had gone the season after. Ipswich went on to qualify for Europe the next season - how good might we have been? Oh well. We’d have never got to see players like Craig Ireland and Peter Handyside a few years later had we gone up, and none of the excitement of nearly going out of business.
Whoooa! Are you kidding me? I remember walking around the perimeter of Wembley stadium before the game ( for a walk and to see the whole thing as it was our first time there) and all the Ipswich fans were all billy big ********, taking the piss out of us. Never liked them much since.
I'd hazard a guess that an overwhelming number of fans will only have good things to say about fan behaviour and interaction that day. For me, despite the loss, it remains one of my favourite ever football days.
after the game, the Ipswich fans were so complementary about the sportsmanship of our fans, that the local paper sent a reporter up to see what all the fuss was about. They had received so many letters praising the reds fans for the way they took the defeat.
I remember that day with a shudder. I proposed to my (now) wife that evening. I've never taken her to a match since, I'm not falling for that one again.
Just thought ....and for the 3rd time that season they were much better than us and deserved their win....we gave it a hell of a go though. Felt sorry and kept safe a young Ipswich couple from some gobby neaderthal reds fans on the tube after the match.
I've no doubt that there was the odd smattering of ***** on either side but on the whole it was one of the most amicable atmospheres I can remember, which is remarkable given the stakes. Both sets of supporters did their teams proud that day from what I saw.
If only hignett or someone else had taken the pen. Because Barnard did not want it, he looked terrified
Agree with Troutman. Haven't watched the match back or seen the re-runs. Can't bring myself to do it.
