Depression is a horrible thing and I suffer from it myself from time to time. I often wonder if all the money in the world would cure it? Evidently not.

It's a terrible thing, and always the narrative seems the same people don't speak out and seek help when they need it most. Terrible thats how it is and I hope that people will learn to be more receptive to people who do need help. The signs are often on show but we don't pick on them. Tomorrow is World mental health day, we are raising money at work for it. So good to see yet another someone with a high profile speak out.

It is hard to speak out. The problem is though, well for me anyway. I just don't know myself what is wrong at times. I just get really down and everything starts to bother me. People 'll sometimes say "what's up?". I'll just smile and say "I'm fine". Eventually it gets that bad that you don't want to go out at all or even socialise. Doctors diagnosed me and stuck me on Citalopram. I was on that for 18 months. It didn't make a **** of difference other than making me gain weight. Alot of it aswell. That I still haven't shifted. I feel fine now as I type this. However, it's always there and can rear it's ugly head at any time.

For anyone on here that experiences depression or anxiety I'd recommend working with IAPT, especially if tablets haven't worked and you want to learn how to overcome it. Whilst there can be a place for medication, tablets can be bit of a sticking plaster and don't tend to solve the root cause.

Barnsley IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) are part of NHS and more details available here: https://www.barnsleyiapt.co.uk

Looks like you can refer yourself online or via your GP :)

If anyone wants any further info on what kind of stuff they and other IAPTs do, let me know. I don't work at that particular one but can give advice on what to expect.

Reading that it doesn't sound like he had depression. He was just extremely miserable/downhearted.

That's not me trying to say depression doesn't exist or anything like that before anyone says.

I'd say it is- all the hallmarks are there. Rumination being the big one. I'm sure there are a lot more symptoms that he hasn't gone into. And no not accusing you at all of downplaying etc :)

Mental health diagnoses such as depression aren't black and white and can affect individuals differently. With mental states fluctuating daily. Don't think it can be inferred he didn't have some form of depression from that article.

Hard to muster that much sympathy for rich, famous, pampered footballers TBH.

He should try working in a meat-processing factory or something, then he'd know what it's like to be depressed.

No. Then he'd know what it's like to have a crap job and not much money. Wouldn't make any difference to whether or not he was depressed

No, I agree. He says "it felt like depression" so unless he went to see a gp and was diagnosed and offered treatment, I guess he doesn't really know.

It's a bit of a non story really, because he felt a bit miserable.

Before anyone jumps on me for trivialising his story and depression, I'm not really. I've tried running a business with it for the last 7 years and it's a nightmare, but just feeling a bit down is only the tip of the iceberg, it's what people think depression is, but it's a lot of other things as well.

Awful comment mate. Depression isn't discriminite. Having lots of money doesn't keep it at bay, or make it less of a battle day in and out.

Question is. Do you know what it's like to be depressed? Have you been diagnosed and treated for depression?

Depression doesn’t discriminate if you’re rich.... it’s just easier to put on a “I’m fine” expression, when from the outside world it looks as if everything should be.

Depression is an illness and can happen to anyone. If you are depressed, talk to someone. Help is all around, but it’s often difficult to make that first move.
