We scored 3 goals. It’s unrealistic to expect us or require us to score 4/5/6/7 goals a game in order to get a result.
I didn't see the overall performance being talked down. I saw concern about some of the back up we have. It's going to be costly on other days. Brown having to fill Moore's boots should never have been allowed to happen, nor should being unable to play two up front when we want to. We have a poor end to the summer transfer window to thank for that. Too many transfer windows have also passed without improving the goalkeeping position. It's the squads with quality in depth who will occupy the automatics at season end. The bigger picture is looking beyond yesterday's win. I'm sure the coaching staff aren't ignoring these things just because we won, so why should the fans. If we can't make those sort of observations, what's the point of this forum.
Because we're not the board. We're meant to be fans. As for quality in depth, we've got more than the majority of this league, with a January window to come. Yeah we could lose one or two but so could anyone. It's league one, we're doing really well, but after each win there's a "yeah but" It's a bit **** mate when people can't just enjoy it for what it is, rather than worrying about the "what ifs". That's just depressed thinking, and I live with that in my everyday life. I'll be fecked if I'm going to apply it to what I do for weekend enjoyment.
Some people are saying "yeah but" because they can see a fragility to the squad. Those observations were amplified yesterday because people weren't tolerant of others views. When I made my remarks, I didn't expect to be defending them all night.
There is fragility everywhere. Sunderland lost at Burton, Peterborough were hammered by us and pompey lost at home to Gillingham. No one has the perfect squad of players with like for like replacements for every position. It is what it is, and it's very good.
Should have been a bit irrelevant as to who made the OP which IMHO was a reasonable one. It certainly created debate and some 'traffic' and I agree with the post that said it is down to the poster having 'previous'. As regards the Barnsley attacking force, I remember posting something similar re final ball and decisions a couple of weeks ago without incurring the wrath of fellow posters. Moreover Stendel has said exactly the same stating it is one of the main areas he is seeking improvement.
Manchester City, arguably the best exponent in this country at this style played Hoffenheim had 28 shots and only scored two goals, Liverpool last year were gui,ty of the same. It seems to be a common fact in this style of football, lots of possession, lots of shots but lower % of conversion.
Success and connecting with the community at the same time, has to be both though. I live in Lincoln and over the years it’s been the same, you walk round the city and see loads of ‘big’ team shirts, but more recently you see Lincoln City shirts everywhere. As Mr Costner was told ‘if you build it they will come’.
Yep- I think this style is much more entertaining and does result in more goals. I'd take this over 1-0s every week.
The last thing I'm going to say about this is, there's a difference between like for like and expecting Brown to fill Moore's shoes. We shouldn't have put ourselves in that position and I can see it returning to haunt us.
Moore is a rare type of striker. Good in the air, fairly quick, decent touch and holds the ball up. You're not going to have many, if any teams with two of his likes in their squad Victor is probably the closest we've got physically but he's not as good We scored 3 after Moore had gone off last week, Brown got one of them, and another 3 without him on Saturday. I'm enjoying the way goals are coming from different positions. Our best teams have had everyone weighing in with the goals.
Nothing he's said about final ball and chances that hasn't already been said. We all know we have loads of possession and sometimes the end product isn't as good as it could be, but when we're scoring so heavily I don't see it as a problem. The possibility that these lads are playing so well, but there is still room for improvement is a very exciting one.
I’m not talking solely about the strikers. I’m talking about the ATTACK in the final third. Which involves all outfield players.
If we improve our decision making (and I believe that's what it is) we'll be unplayable in this league, and probably a mid table championship team. Some teams are struggling against us already and I don't think we've hit anywhere near top form yet, and i'm still enjoying it. When you think we have so many chances, but some of the opportunities never actually register as a chance as we fail on the final ball. Having said that, look at our second goal. Fantastic flick pass and awareness by Bahre to find Moncur running into space, puts a player on his bum and steps inside another before McGeehan shows fantastic calm and composure to hit the ball the opposite way to wrong foot everyone and find the bottom corner, If we manage to play like that for anything near 90 minutes, we'll beat our club record score. If we get set pieces right on top of that, crikey. Especially when you consider a huge amount of our goals were set pieces prior to Stendel, not free flowing open play. We will get better too, much is being made about having kept this side together. Yet you look at our players and many were either on loan elsewhere or just overlooked completely. Pinnock, Cavare, Pinillos, Mowatt, McGeehan and Moore hadn't played 20 games. Let alone be in the same team. I think we're doing the right thing and not flooding our squad with benchwarmers. The kids need chances to shine, block their path and we're back for hoping for a wonderkid from someone elses club. They'll make mistakes, but so did Watson, Eaden, Liddell, Moses, Morgan et al.
I hope Brown looks at the first two Barnsley goals on Saturday. both Potts and McGeehan (particularly McGeehan) put accurate shots past the keeper instead of trying to 'burst the net' which young Jacob seems to. Coaching, more experience making him a bit more composed when he finds himself in goal scoring positions will put that right I am sure. He seems to have a natural ability to create spaces for himself (something that is harder to coach).
Well that kind of makes it even worse. Last 4 games we've scored 11 goals. Not long ago you said we should play well every time we win, now youre raising the bar by saying we should be scoring more goals. I'm sure we'd all like to see half a dozen goals every game, and we may do as the season progresses. It's fine for me as it is. Expectations have been raised and that's a great boon. Let the lads improve over the season rather than burning themselves out.
