My 11 year old Cairn terrier had a bit of a tumble a few weeks ago, vet put him on Metacam (like ibruprofen for dogs) it helped but not at a rate they thought was normal... X-rays showed he had ruptured his cruciate ligament in the stifle (knee) on his left rear leg. They advised surgery which involved cutting some bone away to allow the knee to re-align. He had the surgery late yesterday. All went very well apparently, but the lad is just knocked for six... gonna be a couple of months before he is anything close to his old self... its tearing me up watching him , he is on tramadol ( a doggy dose) its knocked him out a lot. Sorry if this seems a bit drama queen ish to some ...but my dogs are like my children to me and my wife...she is well in bits . The surgeon was well impressed with the lad and the way the op went and said he see's a 99.9% success.... but there is always that nagging doubt .
Worrying about family members whether that's parents, siblings, kids, extended family or family pets is perfectly normal and not drama queen like at all. It would be more worrying for me if you didn't worry about your dog. Try not to worry too much though because although he's not having the most fun time right now he IS on the mend and the vet knows more than me or you. If he was an adult human relation you would belive what the doctor told you and just accept that recovery takes time. Its only because he's a dog who we none vets don't really understand so much and who can't tell you himself not to worry that makes you more uncertain but believe me the vet wouldn't be saying he's happy if he wasn't.
Thankyou ST... you and I have crossed swords more than once on here... but I guess we are both guilty of knee jerks at times... sometimes life has a way of levelling you . Again thankyou for your kind reply, it does help.
Dragon, pets are a full part of a family - you are showing just how much you care about your family - simply put, we love our pets! It sounds like things will get better - please keep us posted about progress - all the very very best
I feel your pain mate our little dog recently had surgery 2 hernias and a cancerous tumour on his testicles after the surgery was a very very bad time for 5 nights the girlfriend and I took turns to sleep with him he's like a new pup now so I hope all turns out well for you all.
All the best DT. One of the reasons I've never had another dog since losing ours in 2001 is very much due to circumstances like this. They become inseparable from the family in both mind and body. Everything crossed mate.
Fingers crossed everything works out. As a dog lover myself I know how it feels to worry so much about them especially when they're not well. Keep us updated with progress.
Sorry to hear about your little 'un, old mate. When he gets home, the poor lad will have to get used to being fussed over to the nth degree by the two of you.
It's your dog that's guilty of the knee jerk. My own mutt passes on his best wishes for a full recovery. Woof woof!
DT... really do hope and pray your little boy gets better very quickly. As a doggy lover you can feel so helpless watching them apparently suffering but as you know, dogs are fighters and get through troubles and strife better than we humans. I don't have and never have had children so my dogs mean more to me than anything I can imagine.
