I'll have a look at the whole game again maybe tomorrow or Tuesday but I was curious to view those incredible incidents again involving late fouls on Pinillos, Thiam and Potts, and that booking for Davies. The Quest tv highlights obviously ignore things like that and the club's extended highlights doesn't show all the controversial stuff either (if any). Plus there is that annoying Mr Bland The Commentator (agency presumably) who watches the match from his laptop and adds his "insight" afterwards.

But back to our full match coverage with the two Matts giving it both barrels in their opinions of Mr Backhouse, the so-called referee. From my seat on the half way line (ESL) it was difficult to see the incidents referred to above but the tv gantry angle shows them perfectly, especially if you rewind and play in slow motion.

Pinillos. A more blatant elbow to the head would be hard to find in any game and it happened just yards from the linesman on that west stand side. I assume he saw nothing, or maybe the referee told him to keep his mouth shut. It was a sending off offence at least but we didn't even get a free kick. Then, to add insult to injury, play continued with our man prostrate which is 100% against the rules these days. Any head injury the game stops immediately, but not with this clown running the show. It's a good job it wasn't a serious whack to the head but what then followed beggars belief. The ball had already gone out of play and the sensible thing would have been a quick throw and we get the ball back. But no - he ordered a dropped ball with both teams competing for it. Unbelievable and totally inept.

Thiam. Mamadou had a brilliant impact on the game and the right hand side of their defence were frightened stiff of him. When he went haring towards goal with only one man to stop him he was cynically impeded. It looked like either a sly punch to the stomach or, at the very least, a tug back on his arm (think back to Adam Reach's treatment of Andy Yiadom in that game when he finally pulled his arm out of the socket). Thiam went down maybe too theatrically but the fact is that he had a clear run to goal so why was it not a red card for the defender?

Potts. Matt the commentator got this a bit wrong on two counts because he named Hedges as the fouled player and there was only ONE foul on him. Brad lost his footing initially and went down but he made a brilliant recovery tackle to get the ball back. But then he had his legs swept from under him by one, if not both, defenders in attendance. He didn't slip; he was cut off at the knees and it was an obvious penalty. Not according to Mr Bean with the whistle though!

Davies. Now we all know that our keeper is non too subtle about his time wasting. None of them are to be honest and it is such a wind up when the away team's keeper does it. But on this occasion he was a bit unlucky. Cameron McGeehan had been struggling all through the match and it was obvious he needed someone to either give him a swift kick up the backside or an arm round the shoulder and some encouragement. It's the skipper's job to do that and Davies went trotting out of his area before taking a goal kick to do just that. You could see the ref standing right behind him so it wasn't the wisest thing to do but you could see what he was trying to do.

In the end all of the above didn't matter because we got the points but there was a tussle after the whistle blew involving Thiam (off camera) so I presume he was having a full and frank discussion with some of their players about how dirty they were. It's becoming a regular spectacle this season - teams coming to rough us up and we're not really capable, or willing, to mix it with them.

The off camera incident at the end was their player twice getting physical with Thiam with the ref watching, he was then pushed back and only then did the referee decide to intervene but despite witnessing it all he still didn't deal with it

The last 10 in particular was one of the most amateurish, inconsistent and pathetic refereeing displays I’ve seen. Don’t normally bother shouting at the ref but after the elbow, I proper lost my rag. It’s alright saying we need to toughen up but that just encourages other teams to continue to kick us from pillar to post.

Is the 'commentator' still that bloke from those old virgin media highlights whose voice hasnt broke yet? The one who, when a team scores, sounds like hes trying to shout down his nose to try and disguise the fact that when he shouts, his voice sounds like a girls?

Thanks - I wasn't looking that way at the time. Perhaps I should have done the referee's course years ago:)
The ref was clearly intent only on dealing with our "indiscretions". Bristol's were just larking about, obviously.

Sounds like that, yes. I think he "covers" other matches as well which proves he is not in the ground but only commentating in hindsight, from his laptop video.

I wouldn’t want to get physical with Thiam. The lads a stocky, well built unit. No fat on him, just pure muscle.

I'm not sure it would encourage other teams more if we gave some back. It's not going to happen because we don't have players like Sheridan or Graham Pugh, or Alan Little, in the side these days. We have clever footballers mostly, with only Cavaré looking like a physical sort of player (he doesn't show it in the right places though)

You're right, he is, but he's not a dirty player is he? There's no malice in him at all as far as I can see.

Quite true. He’s an honest hard working lad and not a trouble-causer.

Quite humble and a nice lad to talk to actually. Appreciates what he has here.

    I agree.

There wasn’t much in the game until the last 10 minutes with the ref failing to control the game or even seemingly make a correct decision. It made it frustrating to watch as a fan and I’m guessing made it frustrating to play in with how the game ended.

I get the refs job isn’t the easiest, I really do but when there’s zero consistency between them or even themselves, it’s just not good enough.

Not that the FA will do anything but they need to be aware of these shocking performances.

They should just get rid of Refs and just rename football as murderball. No ref bias then. Just survival of the strongest.

Sitting in the West stand upper the Pinilos incident happened directly in front of me. After the referee had blown for the throw in he let the physio on at which point it looked as the fourth official was saying something to the referee through his ear peace (I surmise telling him that was a blatant elbow on Pinilos). The referee then looked over to the linesman saying something in his microphone (probably saying did you see the incident ) the linesman shook his head, So it looks as only one out of the three of them had a good view of the incident.

Just done the same and agree with every word. I saw the punch on Thiam at the time as did most of those around me and to say we were displeased is an understatement - the elbow on Pinillos was blatant - if we can see it from 25 yards away in the stand how come a linesman a few feet away cant see it.I thought the ref was poor all game but he completely lost it for the last 10 minutes. As for the non penalty on Hedges words fail

Regarding the booking of Davies, from my seat in the ponty I could clearly hear the ref shouting “Adam” about half a dozen times, obviously wanting him to get on with the game, having been ignored or Davies didn’t hear him (tho we clearly could) he decided to book him, I don’t usually get in the “all refs are crap” arguments but on this occasion he was shocking

Haven't watched it back but when it happened live I also thought their player 'led with his arm' when challenging Moore earlier in the half.

Didn't we have 3 booked to their 2 on Saturday. I don't actually disagree with any of ours but them only having 2 booked is unbelievable.

This is what makes it so galling. We can barely get five yards with the ball at someone’s feet before someone is badly fouled in some way. Sometimes we get a free kick but some of the teams we’ve seen should have had a red card or three at least. I don’t believe referees are against us as such. They’re just downright incompetent.
