the much awaited Peter Jackson documentary on BBC2 9:30 . Rare footage and painstakingly coloured and added sound . Bits I’ve seen are fantastic in bringing to life what is normally Charlie Chaplin type images .
Really looking forward to it, Watched the Festival of Remembrance last night.... got some dust particles in my eyes somehow. This morning went to our little villages Cenotaph... bit breezy and as the last post was blown the wind somehow made my eyes water again.
Just got back from pictures vatching this. Wery good and moving. Didnt realise it vas on ******* tv tonight though, £45 it cost me ffs.
Went to Tarn Hall Cenotaph this morning. Incredible turn out, thought the reds had had promoted again.
Huge turnout. Couldn't see a thing. One small improvement needed for next tine - They need to announce who is laying the wreaths over the loud speakers. Didn't know what was going off after the immaculate two minutes silence.
They had no idea of the horrors they would face, and it said afterwards that their families were no wiser when they came home, and it was pretty much not mentioned and everyone just got on with life. We probably know more about the detail now than they did then. All the more reason to honour them I reckon. Very sad and wasteful
Turning to colour somehow made it feel more real, the thing that sticks with me is how they seemed to take in their stride, despite shocking conditions, morale seemed to be still high and even the people who were commenting still talk as if it was just part of a normal day.
It was an utterly remarkable film. Everybody should watch it. Truly harrowing and very hard to watch in places. It left me feeling angry at just how little those remarkably brave mens lives were worth. I am amazed that every man that came back wasn't mentally ruined. They were so matter of fact about their situation and the horror they were living through it was humbling in the extreme.
The fact stated in the film that, on average, they put on a stone in weight and grew an inch in height, says it all about what they were coming home to.
Sounds like they were coming home to not much really. No jobs or prospects of them getting one. People at home almost oblivious as to the horrors and carnage that they had gone through. The ‘shell-shocked’ shot on the spot or by firing squads as cowards.
That was unbelievable, she'll shock!!! ? They must have been terrified, CAN'T even begin to imagine what they went through!
