Right I know this a subject as old as the hills but I was talking with my dad about it today, had a nap before I walked the dog, and literally dreamed about it (great sleep). This what I came up with: Heinz Muller Darren Barnard Arjan Dezeeuw John Stones Gerry Taggart Joe Joyce Darren Sherridan Neil Redfearn (c) Ronnie Glavin Craig Hignett Ashley Ward That is a right team. Back 3 with wing backs. Some right talent and some properly hard players to add some steel as well. That back 3 would be depressing for all but the very best strikers. I debated putting Watson in (incredible shot stopper) but he was always susceptible to the high ball. I accept that Joe Joyce might be a controversial pick for some but he was a player and his work rate was phenomenal, and Barnsley through and through.
I love him, but if we're basing it purely on performances in a Barnsley shirt John Stones shouldn't be in the team, especially as he didn't really play centre back.
Moot point for me. I reckon we can claim him and play him up front if we wanted to. I can understand the objection though. Mick Mccarthy or Paul Futcher on standby.
Dave Watson is the best keeper in my time and would have had a long premier league career and England caps if it wasn't for his injury. Tommy Taylor would surely have to be up front for what he achieved before his sad passing.
Dave Watson superb - but worrying on crosses and high balls. Love him to bits though - absolute legend. Tommy (God rest him) 1) I never saw him 2) he didn't score as many goals as Cess McCormack who was in the same team and nobody has ever matched Cess for goals. What I would say for Tommy though is that his record at Man United was amazing - year after year - and his goals to game ratio for England is insane. Sadly I've never seen him - maybe the odd scrap of really crap film. So I've gone with what I know.
Just goes to show if we picked a best 11 on what we've seen, a best 11 on what they did for us and a best 11 of our history on what we had read and heard, we would have three largely different line ups.
Yes. Then you'd have to start talking about Danny Blanchflower, Johnny Kelly and David Hurst and others. Mike Sheron at Stoke was a different player to the one we had. Andy Payton was good (alright) for us - but he is a proper hero at Burnley. We've had plenty of them. Would you put Kieran Trippier in?
Would definitely pick Dave Watson in goal with Bobby Hassell and Adie Moses somewhere in defence. Not sure who I’d get shut of though
Adie Moses?! Ahead of who?! Lovely guy, fond memories, but a weak link in our Premier League side for me and not a top flight player. Sorry.
Big Heinz Glavin McCarthy Sir Bob Redfearn De Zeew Hignet Ward Barnard Winnall Conor Subs Hammill (hero) Taggart Dave Watson Nicky Eaden Brendon o Connell Hendrie Scowen
I'd have Harry Hough in goal, Johnny Kelly on the left wing (best winger I've seen in a Red's shirt) Danny Blanchflower and Tommy Taylor. Before my time, but I think George Robledo should be included.
