Just read that he's retired following him passing the last three years playing in the USA.

Thought he was a fantastic player, possibly underused at international level.

Always felt he was one of those flair players that never hid from his responsibilities as a team player. When we beat Chelsea in the FA Cup, I thought he was absolutely brilliant for them. Lost much of his career to injuries too.

I know it's hard not be cynical about top level players given the money they earn, but I think he's given the game plenty, he's been enjoyable to watch, and deserves a good retirement. I hope he's not lost to the game.

He was a cracking player, it’s a shame his prime was so short, I remember thinking the Liverpool move was a good one for him but he was never the same player after the injuries he had.

At least he won a double at Chelsea & scores one of the best goals any English player will ever score at a World Cup

It's a real shame that players don't drop down the leagues as often as they used to.

Imagine someone like Joe Cole finishing his career by joining a small club for a season.

Top players take so much money out of football and it would be great to see more put something back at the lower end by putting bums on seats.

Just look at the impact Allan Clarke had for us back in the day.

He did to a degree didnt he? He played for Coventry in League one before heading out to MLS.

I know what you mean though, I guess players don't need the money like past players did.

I think he did, he went to Villa in the championship then Coventry in League One then to the 2nd division in the States with Tampa, I reckon he’d probably carry on if his body could take it.

I think it’s so much tougher now for older players to drop down the leagues as players are fitter than ever at all levels

Thought he was a class player and would be even better in this era where teams play formations that would really suit him. He could be the creative player England are sorely missing right now as one of those three players behind Kane.

I still think that goal was a bit of a fluke though .............
