My mother (Not a football fan) is adamant that Barnsley won something along the lines of 'the giant killers cup' in the early 60s. It was displayed in Saxone shoe shop down the arcade. I think she's losing her marbles. Can anyone shed any light on this?
She's right. During our FA Cup run 0f 1960/61, when we reached the quarter finals, a national newspaper (can't remember which one) presented us with the trophy. As a Third Division club, we beat Second Division Luton & Huddersfield, before losing to the eventual cup runners up Leicester after a replay.
I thought it was displayed in Harralls jewellers window though, not the shoe shop. It was a biggish trophy, similar to the FA Cup
There used to be a plaque/trophy displayed on a wall under the west stand years ago, it was in the shape of a steam train name plate. If my memory is to be trusted I think that was the giant killers trophy. I'm quite sure it will still be somewhere in Oakwell. It would be interesting if the media guy that posts on here could have a look round and make some inquiries.
You’re getting two things mixed up. Like most clubs there was (probably still is?) a loco name plate showing the name of the team mounted on a wall. As I said above the Giantkillers Cup was an actual cup, similar to the FA Cup. It was an odd award though seeing as we didn’t actually slay any giants that year
LNER class B17 number 2869 (BR 61669) was named Barnsley. A number of this class were named after Division 1 and 2 teams of the day. I saw the nameplate displayed in the entrance to the director's suite under the West Stand when I was on. Stadium tour some years ago. Other clubs also have "their" nameplate. Strangely enough Manchester City was renamed Tottenham Hotspur at some stage.
It wasnt mate. It was 100% definitely the Sunday Pictorial. We used to buy the Sunday Pictorial in the early 60s. My dad kept a copy of that edition for donkeys years
