Just stop in the pub? It's obvious that some people have no interest in the game and are clearly there for the social event/piss up. I was looking down into the concourse fifteen minutes into each half and there were people stood there with 3/4 full bottles casually sipping and chatting as if they were in the pub. What's the bloody point spending £20 on a ticket to stand in the cold and do that if you've no interest in watching the match? Mind boggles.
I know of a Wednesday fan who went to Southampton on the day they played there, solely to get drunk in Southampton pubs. No intention of ever going to the game. And this wasn't a one-off.
Agreed. Amount of times people go for a piss up and not watch the game... Shame when people want to watch the game and can't get tickets
waaaay back in the eighties when I used to go with the supporter's club it used to drive me mental that we'd drive hours to away games and miss the kick off because some of em couldn't drag themselves out of the inevitable boozer we had to stop at on the way.
I don't tend to drink in football grounds as the beer invariably is ****. On the odd occasion I have had a drink and then heard the team is coming out, I've either necked it or left it. These people were casually sipping as if the match was completely superfluous. Bonkers.
Yup. When I used to play for the supporters club, I can remember a few occasions when some of the lads just stayed in the pub whilst we went to the game.
Going by the amount of beer being served up in the Crown, and some buying 2 pint glasses, I reckon it was a good afternoon for the local establishments.
Each to their own, are you suggesting that you should dictate how people spend their spare time? You could have a hundred different permutations about the match day experience, who are you? I speak as someone who takes their kids every week and rarely has a drink at games but again, who are you to dictate to people what they can and can’t do ?
He isn't dictating though, is he? He's just made an observation about people who go to the football and spend more time drinking than watching and that he can't understand it. He's hardly giving Hitler a run for his money is he?
I wouldn't be a very good dictator if I was only making suggestions would I? I will make a suggestion to you though - read before you reply.
I suppose the answer is because they do want to go to the match. Maybe it isn't as high a priority to them to see every minute of the game. Maybe they only have a passing interest in the game itself and enjoy the social aspect more as you say. Maybe their friends want to go and they don't want to feel left out so tag along. I'm sure if they warned to stay in the pub then they would.
