Much maligned, unfairly IMHO. Did the hard yards to set the club up for the Clarke revolution and never got the credit he deserved. RIP Mr Iley
https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/jim-iley-death-newcastle-united-15432638.amp Well thought of at Newcastle with 249 appearances in seven years, being the captain and getting them promoted from midfield. I am sure our own media department will post an article up later on the official site detailing his time with us.
RIP - Manager that for all his flaws left the club in a much better position than it was when he took over and provided the base for Clarke to push the club forwards.
Yes. He was manager for my first 4 years watching the club (74-78). At the time all our best players were sold pretty much, but he still brought in quality players, like Brian Joicey. I'm too young to remember his playing days, but he racked up over 500 appearances, half of those being for Newcastle.
RIPJim Have some great memories of your management time . Took some flak for things probably not in your control but with good heart and professionalism.
Yes a proper old school player and manager. He did good stuff at Oakwell without getting the credit he deserved and moved on to a bigger club in Blackburn Rovers, so he was obviously well thought of in the game.
Condolences to Jim's family. He did a grand job at Peterborough before coming to us, where he had to pick up a team languishing at the bottom of the pile and did it on minimal resources, which showed that he was a players' manager through and through. One of our own from South Kirkby, where he must have worked at either South Kirkby, or Frickley Colliery I guess, and we'll forgive him his time at Sheffield United. Graced some of the country's top teams, including Spurs, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, in all of which he performed as a cultured wing-half with a great tactical skill on the ball and reading of the game. He certainly could pick a pass and run the midfield. He deserves to be well-remembered, both as a player and as a manager, who could spot talent (thin Mick Butler and Anton Otulakowski) and develop it into good professional players. Well played, Jim - one of our own!! RIP
His best bit of business was finding Anton Otulakowski, an unknown Dewsbury lad, and turning him into a £70,000 player. That was a decent fee for the time and Anton went on to have a reasonable career at West Ham. He also sold Martin Gorry to Newcastle who had been a fairly average full back for us and went on to make the grand total of one sub appearance for Newcastle. We got a nice £50,000 fee for Martin and those two bits of business went into the coffers and helped our chairman to sanction the £55,000 signing of Allan Clarke in 1978. Maybe without Jim Iley's good business head we wouldn't have been able to afford Clarke. I know that Leeds should have let us have him on a free seeing as he was coming to us as player-manager but that's not the Leeds way is it? I just hope they gave it all back to us in compensation when he went back to Elland Road to fail as their manager.
