Iley's Republican army, we're barmy wherever we go we fear no foe because we are the YRA........RIP Jim
Pretty sure it was £70,000 reported in the Chronicle. The combined fees of £120,000 sticks in my memory. Good business for the time. It was a shame that we had to lose Anton and others like Bob Doyle who was also a top midfielder a few seasons earlier. That's how it's always been though - we find them, develop them and sell them on. Hopefully we're not having a fire sale THIS January though
Manager for the first 5 years that I supported BFC (73-78). My abiding memory is all the Iley Out chants at the latter end of his time with us. In reality he did a sterling job in difficult times and laid good foundations for Allan Clarke to take us to the next level. As kids a group of us once went to training and he was good enough to give us a little tour of the changing rooms and physio area. Seemed a really nice fella. RIP Jim
The first Barnsley manager in my time of going to Oakwell. Much maligned but clear by the comments and his career he was a proper football man. Condolences to his family. Oakwell a better place for Jim’s contribution.
Extremely sad news. I was a teenager at the time who was convinced Jim Iley was doing a bad job, forever selling our better players cheaply (with the exception of Otulakowski & Gorry) and replacing them with cheaper, older, poorer players. As a know-it-all youngster, I believed I was always right, knew all the answers, so if anyone didn't agree then they were simply wrong and 'obviously' these people didn't understand this issue as well as I did. I no longer hold the same assinine, puerile, pathetic, arrogant, ignorant views that I did then. Jim Iley stabilised the club and got it moving in the right direction. R.I.P. Mr Iley. I was 100% in the wrong when I criticised you.
The thing is, old mate, I accumulated all this 'knowledge' without having done a day's work in my life at that time. Nor had I needed to shoulder an ounce of responsibility. At the risk of repeating myself, I was convinced that if anyone held an alternative point of view, they simply didn't understand the problems meaning they weren't as clever or as intelligent as me (their disagreement was all the proof I needed). I'd not even contributed a penny to the purchase of my season ticket every year, as my now Late Father bought it for me. Jim Iley did a great job in very difficult circumstances. Only a pathetic Muppet would think otherwise. Unfortunately, I WAS that pathetic Muppet!
Noticeable that Jims son posted on the Peterborough forum about his dad's death, but not on here as far as I can see. Did he get such a hard time at Oakwell that it left a bad impression on his son? If so then there's maybe a lesson in it for us all, especially now with social media.
Was he ever invited back in his later years as a guest of the club to a game? POTY awards? The numerous functions they do? Maybe Jim felt forgotten or ignored. Maybe we had got in touch with him from time to time and he didn't want anything to do with us? Did he ever mention us in interviews? No idea because I haven't ever seen interviews by him to know if he's spoke about his time with us. Haven't a clue if he looked back fondly or not. It's a shame his son didn't break the news on here though. Hope there is no bad feeling.
After some really grim years bumping along the bottom of the pile he steered us to two promotion challenging seasons, changed the perspective at the club to one looking up rather than down....and gave us Brian Joicey. Cheers Jim.
As many have said earlier, I too first caught the bug when Mr Iley was the manager. I always knew when we were about to make a (or should I say the) substitution....... there was always a chorus of boos when Jim left the directors box and came to the dug-out to oversee the substitution 10 minutes from time. And as others have more eloquently said - it was he that left for Blackburn (totally unexpected as far as I was concerned) that paved the way for Mr Clarke to arrive. Is it my memory playing tricks on me but did we finish 6/7th in consecutive seasons tailing off toward the end of season(s) after selling key players? RIP Mr Iley
He WAS given a hard time by the supporters and I was as guilty as anyone. Your final point is, in my opinion, valid.
Found this Spurs related interview he did just two months ago, where he says he enjoyed his time with us https://superhotspur.com/2018/09/16/my-interview-with-former-spurs-wing-half-jim-iley/
