I was telling my welsh mate, who currently lives at Poggy, that I can often tell where people are from in Barnsley from their accent... he was surprised to hear that the accent in Barnsley had local differences...
Yark is in Narth Yarkshire. Any folks Narth of Yark say Yarkshire. I should know, I’ve got three children who are born and bred up here.
My West Yorkshire mate always texts me in slang using 'reet' instead of reyt . When I see him I always say all reyt Dave and he says all reyt back tbf , but then texts 'reet game that ' . nuts the lot of 'Em . Bloody foreigners .
but does your accent vary depending on where you are or who you're speaking to? My son would talk 'broad' Barnsley with his mates but when talking to his Scottish grandmother it would be the Queens English.
Both and neither. I’m proud of my accent, but modify some of the more broad elements when at work, or talking to people from other parts of the country.
Reight and reyt are pronounced the same . 'Reet' reminds me of that Jackie Wilson song . It's wierd when I go to Leeds,Wakey or Sheffield with work they expect me to be a stereotypical ' Barnsley Lad ' .
In the 70s, Austin Mitchell and Bert Gaunt brought out a record entitled "Teach thisen Tyke". It gave examples of all the different dialects/accents in the broad acres.
